Here’s a few things I consider when moving a vp to an svp : 1) are you currently running a mid-size account with little senior oversight? Im not referring to the tactical implementation but total account. 2) do you have new biz experience? Have you demonstrated that you can be persuasive in the room? Have you come up with ideas? Written slides that make it into final version without much editing? 3) do you have the respect of integrated specialists — creative, earned, digital, etc? 4) do you have presence in your practice — good rep among people you manage? Seen as a rising star? If you have a major outage in one of these areas, it can make the difference. Also get to understand who makes the decision in terms of promotions and make sure you have someone advocating for you at the senior level. Good luck!!
And... do you manage a book of clients, really mostly under your leadership, of $1.5mm++
a lot of the agencies where I have worked base this very heavily on biz dev - both bringing in new leads and closing deals. It’s been very much a numbers game in my experience; and some really shitty leaders having been promoted because they were able to close a big piece of business. Then their entire team/ division quits, the client feels the instability and eventually resigns. EVP1 seems to work in a far more sane environment
