I wouldn’t volunteer that you shouldn’t have been promoted unless it’s clearly not a fit. Imposter syndrome is REAL.
It’s fair to ask for coaching or training on the areas you feel under qualified in, though. Like a PP said, can you identify those specific areas?
Is it because you truly lack the skills and experience, or because the increasing responsibility is intimidating? If the latter, I’ve been in the same position as you and still somewhat feel this way today. I was promoted last summer to my current role (equivalent to SAE) and felt unqualified at the time, intimidated by the new responsibility, out of my league. I realized after the fact that getting thrown in the deep end like this forced me to grow. It’s been uncomfortable at times, but has been a net positive.
If they promoted you, they must have seen your potential. It’s up to you and your particular circumstance, but I would not ask to have the promotion taken back!
A few things have helped me feel better: first, my own peers who were promoted around the same time as me felt similarly, so we commiserated together. Find people (in your agency or out of it) you can talk to and bounce things off of.
2nd, have an honest conversation with your manager about areas of growth and where you’re feeling the most challenged or unprepared. Get really specific and ask for concrete feedback/coaching. Find a mentor if your manager isn’t providing good feedback.
Ultimately this experience helped me see that “fake it till you make it” sometimes works haha. Especially at an agency, you grow into the role.
This has been extremely helpful. I can’t pinpoint exact lack of skills but just in general feel like I’m a fraud and that I’m going to let my team down.
I’ll think about it to see how I can approach my manager on what skills I may be missing.
Imposter syndrome is real! Look it up. See if there are some trainings you can take to improve or ask for some coaching sessions. I mean even team up with someone whose a smea in your problem areas and propose it as a cross train
Are there specific skills that you are concerned about?
