Tax - anyone at tax manager or higher level exit to something non tax? Browsing job postings and 99% is for public accounting firms… wondering if I can switch to accounting or something without too steep of a paycut?

I left as a SM for a tax senior manager role in industry but interviewed for a couple of non tax roles (technical accounting, controller, transition roles). Several peers left as managers for analyst roles too

I hated tax so much that I took a pay cut to switch to audit. I don’t regret it, though audit’s not much better than tax.

Why do you want to exit Tax? Isn't that a very good skill to have that can secure you many opportunities?

Unfortunately manager seems to be the spot where you often have to take a step back if looking to exit tax. Sweet spot to make the transition seems to be 1-3 YOE.

You waited too long. Tax for life!

So after two weeks of waiting (and giving up on the idea of getting the job really), the recruiter got back to me.

What’s going on FB friends,

I am contemplating a move to industry working at a VC, Tax Director role east coast. Looks like it will be primarily overseeing compliance with some aspect of advising on structures etc. There is another tax reporting head above me.

The potential comp is the low 200k with a 10% bonus (still higher than what I am making). I feel this is pretty low for VC standards but maybe my standards are also too high. I have generally seen 25% bonus with carry.

Any thoughts?
