Being that you were told you are a good candidate to take on the 2nd role which would necessarily put you on the path to getting the 1st role, this could be a sign they may want to put you through a process to ensure you are prepared to take on the 1st role. This could indirectly be leadership’s response to your inquiry about the 1st role. UNLESS you were told you were a good fit by a colleague and NOT leadership then I’d say proceed with said 1st role to get a clear answer first before moving with the 2nd role.
I understand, appearing you don’t know what you want from a company (other than advancing, with your skills, and helping the company advance too) can be a stumbling block. It’s a bit nonsensical to me. I wish you luck, let us know what happens please.
I always assume there are talks behind the scenes for internal roles. It is unfortunate, but it seems like they may already be given away before they post - manufacture scarcity! Would you be able to pursue both, and be transparent about it?
I plan on asking about both. I’d like to understand if the first role is closed or many I’m not qualified for (doubt that part).
Why don’t you just put your hat in both and keep your options open. Just like when you have a job, you keep looking for step ups.
I say go for both! No reason to cut the cord on #1 when you haven’t received a “no”. Is there any reason why you couldn’t put your name in the hat for both?
There’s no reason other than I don’t want it to look like I don’t know what I want at the company.
