I was in a similar situation and decided to get an Amex for the food points (I eat out a lot). I like it.

platinum doesn’t give points for restaurants, gold is x4 points in food i believe
Just get the venture one capital card. Use it for all your travel, it’s great

Do your parents have good credit? Ask them to put you as an authorized user on their longest running card….and boom you have credit history older than you
I would stick to no-fee rewards cards for your next few. If you want to build credit you’ll want to keep those accounts open for the long term (even if you switch which card is your primary) and paying a fee every year will add up. Chase Freedom, Citi Custom Cash, US Bank Altitude GO are all decent cards in that category. Venmo’s card with Synchrony is kind of similar. All of these give you at least 1% rewards on all purchases but more on some key categories- either rotating ones, whichever ones you spend most in, or a fixed set of categories like restaurants, travel and streaming services.
Chase Sapphire Reserve was great for me post college. I too had a Discover card in college. I started with the Chase Sapphire at 10,000 limit and now have a 30,000 limit - comes in handy with travel and have alot of perks and benefits
You’re right! I call yearly and try to get a retention fee so that the fee can be waived or at least reduced. Worked once. Also the priority pass and tsa precheck/global entry and $300 travel credit kinda balance itself out so I cringe every year but still keep it lol
I have the Chase Sapphire Reserve but if I were to get one now, it definitely would be the Venture X. Venture X has a lot of the perks that CSR offers with lower annual fee
Airline credit cards are best for non-consultants. Their main perks are base-level status you will already have and miles, especially for money spent on the airline. Consultants do most of their airline spending on the corporate card, so they are missing the mileage multiplier benefit. And when you redeem miles for a ticket, you are forgoing status-qualifying activity.
A personal Amex or Chase Sapphire might allow you better earnings on the categories that will go on your personal card, and paying in their points is treated as cash for status and mileage accrual. Or a card for your prefer hotel chain since paying in points for a night still counts towards status.
