You won't have time, take you like 2 hours to get out of the airport and you will need to apply for Visa on arrival. I would say to take the Express train into the city and visit the forbidden palace and grab a meal on ghost street
You absolutely don’t have enough time. The walls are still a good distance out of city center, even from PEK. A cab driver may take you there, but that dude could easily bolt while waiting for you. You’ll be able to snap a picture, and freak out about traffic being bad (which it may!!). Go to Tianamen, pose next to the Mao portrait (don’t bother with forbidden city) and see the ridiculous shit on Wangfujing
Find a local taxi driver to take you there and back. Shouldn’t cost more than $100. I went last year. Just don’t pay until the return trip. Don’t risk getting stranded there.
D3 you don't need a traditional tourist visa but have to get clearance in the layover visa line to step foot in the country which is also time consuming
Going to be tight and you won't get to see the nice parts. But if you're just looking to check the box, it's doable I guess. Local taxi should definitely work and be cheaper.
^ I got stranded there. It wasn’t fun. Local taxi will work or get a personal driver for the day. Think my friends found theirs on tripadvisor. Just know that Beijing airport sucks and I would try to get back there two hours before gates close at the latest
Agree, you'd literally be seeing it, taking a picture, and then rushing back, being stressed out while stuck in traffic the whole time.
A friend and I booked a tour to the Great Wall for a long layover in Beijing and paid ~150/per person. Our driver/guide was great; he spoke English well, was knowledgeable, & helped navigate crowds so we got the most of our experience! I would say for the convenience (of seeing a wonder of the world on a layover!) and the quality of the tour it was worth the price.
Any international flight requires 2 Hours before flight departure. And I thought China now has new policy to allow travelers passing through to stay for less than 72 hours without a visa.
Thank you all so much for your responses! I’ll do some more research on the other sights but it looks like we’ll have to play it by ear based on the visa line and traffic. But looks like the wall may be a no-go in potential Friday rush hour😩
