I believe that teaching one off courses pays peanuts. If you want to be a professor in a university, that probably requires a masters, but you may be able to work for it when you start. Go to LinkedIn and find Mel White. She was a colleague who made the switch because she had a family to support and was sick of the insecurity of the agency system. She’s super gun-ho about advertising though. Believe she’s at Syracuse and I believe she had to complete some sort of thesis or Master’s project. Send her an email if you’re serious. She’s really nice
So kind of you to send this info., I will reach out and thank you!
I have thought about it and know a few people who have taught or teach at ad schools or universities. I don’t think many places will require a Masters if you have enough industry experience. However, don’t bank on actually making a living solely out of teaching. It pays peanuts and most people just do it because they want to give back or to earn a little bit of extra money .
Start with contacting local universities or certain professors as a guest lecturer. It’s easier to navigate from within. I have friends who are adjunct professors in addition to their full-time positions
Great advice thank you!
I’m adjunct at FIDM with no Masters and love it.
That is great to hear!
I have tried, but it’s hard to break into the academic world. I still hope I can do it someday
What about the alumni group of your college? Or AAAA’s?
I did it and love it. Started by giving a case study lecture in a couple of classes. Guess they liked it because they asked me to teach a class the next semester. Next semester added a second course. Now teaching four classes. It’s a great way to spread your experience, but also a great way to connect with and learn from the next generation of ad folks.
It would be a cool way to ride out the end of my career.
I’ve thought about it and even spoken to a few schools. Some will certainly take work experience in lieu of a Masters, and some won’t.
Ultimately, though, I don’t know if I really want to teach.
I know that is what I also have to think about-lol!
No one teaches for the money peeps. It’s not a retirement plan. Do it for the love or to give back.
When you say the pay is peanuts/garbage, how much is that? What about benefits? Access to research tools/subscriptions or other perks?
I did adjunct teaching for a semester at a film department. I had a terrible experience overall, despite some perks. There was no money, I was treated poorly by the department head and it was a lot of work for very little reward. The kids were good and two star pupils have gone on to do well in film so far, but overall I was very disappointed as I’d hoped to find it more rewarding.
I teach a class once a year at a university and have done this at a few different ones. The pay is garbage but I enjoy it and it makes me fresher at my day job. Also, occasionally I refer my former students for jobs and make a referral bonus.
