I definitely think it's a mixture of both. People don't like being deceived, and they don't like it when companies replace real people with technology so casually. I personally don't like it at all and think that AI should help humans, not replace them. I have an instinctive, knee-jerk negative reaction when I hear this kind of thing.
Deception is the part people don’t get. Some keep trying to “get away with something.” Then have to do damage control when it’s discovered. It sets everyone back who are responsible and open and using it as an intended tool.
I think it's mostly because people feel misled. If the station had been honest from the start, I doubt the reaction would be quite as severe. There's a lot of sensitivity regarding the use of AI, so any time a company appears to be trying to pull a fast one, they're going to get a lot of scrutiny and pushback because of it.
Radio is by nature a parasocial relationship of speaker/listener, so finding out the person you've given time & attention to isn't real would definitely be upsetting. It's also insulting because DJing is one of those gigs where there are thousands of young creatives eager to get their foot in the door of finite air time, and you're giving it to a bot??? Without disclaimer?? Bad move all around. This is why we need regulations around AI use in all areas, but especially creative.
Unfortunately, radio gigs have narrowed since the early 2000s. Before that, local DJs had a fan base. Syndication shook that up where you could get someone for every genre playing across the country. Then streaming threatened the AM/FM airwaves. Still, they all had humans.
