I honestly don't think local news is coming back, at least in the formats that we always knew. There are economic and logistical reasons for that. And something that gets overlooked is that the audience has turned its back on news. Newspapers were commonplace in households generations ago, and various family members would read them. But as society has dumbed down and given up on reading that's just much less common. So even if there was a good product, there's probably not enough audience to support it.
The professionalization of journalism may end up being a historical aberration, probably for the worse. Long ago, information moved very inefficiently, and that kept a lot of mouths fed.
Where are they supposed to get that news? Local channels and newspapers are things that have been declining for decades. Why can’t social media get accurate information? Whether digital, printed, etc. you should take most things with grains of salt.
I think local news can be rebuilt, but it needs actual investment and trust. Social media fills gaps with noise
I share your doubts. When the only "news" people get is from neighborhood Facebook groups or (heaven forbid) Nextdoor, it’s easy for misinformation to spread. We need sustainable funding solutions, or we’ll keep losing ground.
Unfortunately I think a lot of younger generations really do get their news from social media and don’t fully understand that these are quite often inaccurate and biased
