Those that make $150K+, how did you do it? I’m 27, I have an MBA in marketing and 5 years of experience with bidding, but am only making $75K. I want to break the six figure mark, but I don’t see many jobs in my area that pay that much. What’s a good industry to get into and how? I’d like to make enough to start investing in real estate to start generating passive income but can’t do that with my current salary.

Biotech and Pharmaceutical industry…come join us! We’re always looking for marketers. DM me your resume. I’ve worked in this industry for over 10 years and you just need to be fearless. I didn’t have biotech or pharmaceutical industry experience. BUT I knew that marketing is transferable.

likeuplifting

There are very few pharmacist or medical professionals in pharma these days, don't believe that you need medical background. There are more technical scientific and scientists, engineers and biochemical specialists in pharma, biotechnology.

Definitely move into tech if you want to break six figures. I personally jumped from $85k base to $115k base moving into tech. With bonus and RSU vesting I easily break $150k in TC.

like

RSUs are great. They essentially give you a bonus at the 1yr mark and then quarterly until they’re fully vested. A quick google search will explain how vesting works

I’m also in finance, within marketing and got an offer for $130k base, $28k sign-on bonus and annual bonus of at least 20%. So I believe it’s really based on the industry.

like

Wow that’s a good package! If you need other marketers on your team, I am available.

Advocate for yourself and I hate to say it but you’re going to have to jump job to job for a bit… most places I’ve worked for only offer small pay jumps unless you move to a director position and above

like

Damn @ 90k total comp and only a hs diploma 😅 I believe the field could be the issue. An MBA in my fields total comp would be about 150/160 total comp.

I’m thinking of staying in operations for the mean time, although would love to move to finance over time. I would love to finish my degree sooner than later, I definitely would feel more accomplished.

Healthcare tech. Got me to about 150k 4 years out from undergrad.

like

Hi could you recommend what areas of healthcare tech or what are some good organizations to apply too? I just pivoted I to healthcare technology and a pay-cut but the position is nothing like what i was told I would be doing. It could be just the organization I got into and it’s a widely reputable place in my area.

I’d consider moving out to marketing into sales if you’re up for the challenge and can make the transition, but it’s extremely risky. I’m actually on the opposite end. Was making 77k in an account management/sales/marketing hybrid role and moved into IC sales where I’m now at $100k but I think I’d be much less stressed moving back into my previous role. Otherwise maybe additional marketing certifications? Or CX?

Operations (sales or revenue)

Tech consulting - UX averages 80k probably in my area but I do UX in tech consulting and make 145k w 5 years experience

Industry and specific niche/function are huge factors when it comes to marketing salaries.

B2B pays better than B2C in general (there are a few exceptions, like pharma). Within B2B, certain industries pay better than others (tech pays well, and even within tech, Cybersecurity and certain other industries pay even better).

For niche/function, being closer to sales helps. Direct revenue-driving roles (growth/demand/performance marketing) or roles that bridge sales & product (product marketing) pay the best.

Here's my progression in tech marketing:

Entry: 50k + very light equity
Couple years in: 75k + better equity
~5 years in: 90k + 10% bonus + decent equity
6 years in (current): 125k + 15% bonus + solid equity

You really start to hit the gas at the ~5+ year mark (senior IC to mid-level manager) and then again at the ~10-15+ year mark (senior manager/exec). Exec salaries in marketing (at least in tech) tend to hit a ceiling of 200-300k (but the equity/bonuses can be lucrative).

All of this differs by geo of course.

In consulting these salaries are going to come with experience. 75k feels a bit low for consulting. My first job out of business school was with IBM making 100,000 ( that was back in 2008). Is it possible that contracts has a ceiling?

Consulting / or 10 years experience

I am also in this boat in the LA market with over 15yrs of experience between wealth management and banking and a MBA. I'm right at 70k and every job I apply for I get immediate denials and I've been trying for last year, and I'm 36.

No I work in fiduciary sector at a Bank in project management

How good are you at your job? Move to Philly!

Investment banking. $210k total comp, two years out of undergrad.

Hey everyone. I'm an IT guy and have been Into computers since I was 10 year old. I'm currently a consultant working on projects from Canada. Ive never been able to hit the 6 figure mark and yet everyone calls on me as I'm professional and know what I'm doing, I'm finally close to a 6 figure salary and have 15 years of professional work experience and I have a degree in computer engineering and certifications here n there. My co worker has a way with words and negotiations and is making a salary I would dream of right now. I've always struggled financially as nobody wants to pay me what I think I'm worth. I'm currently an Azure SME and from what I read online, an architect for Azure makes 120K US. I'm no where near that. Should I look for work elsewhere ? I've asked for a raise that's said to be months away even though my reviews are 100% in all 4 of the employers decision making. Not sure I'll get anywhere near what I'm expecting and feel like I'm setting myself up for disappointment in expectations even though I have worked extremely hard at this employer. Should I look for other work or relocate?

Get your affairs in order and deuce out if the expectation is higher income now.

Otherwise wait, and watch the salary creep up. You're speaking on an example of how our world works. If the work you're doing can be valued at $500,000 a year but you're willing to do it for $50,000 a year... Meaning you signed the contract... What incentive does that person/company have to pay you more?

If someone was willing to detail your car for $20 and worked really hard at detailing cars for 10+ years and had references for their work vs. someone with an MBA or better and certs who had a car detailing business and charged $400... Who would you choose?

As for actually getting in at some other quality org and getting the $$$ experiences are going to vary.
Some will say it's a numbers game...
Some will say get dozens of recruiters...
Some will say network...
To me it's a combination of the three and a lot of good fortune. This also depends on the market you're applying in and industry. Enough people don't know what the market tiers or industries are and just luck into it. Do a web search on tier cities/metros and be lightly amused.

Texh sales, good base at 2 yrs is $150k. 50/50 OTE can clear $ 300K

Where’s your MBA from? Unless it’s a top tier school, it’s not going to get you more money. But you should look at industries that pay more like tech. Even media pays $100k for 5 years of experience so you’re underpaid.

I disagree. It can open a lot of doors and give one a nice jump in salary. - per my experience

like

Making yourself indispensable after a few job jumps to get a solid base of salary you're happy with. In the early days of my career jumping company every 2/3 years meant a bigger salary spike than staying; after that find a way to become indispensable so that ideas you have for new structures or just higher salaries and promos are looked at positively as the opposite is you leaving.

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?
