Thoughts on large companies taking PPP loans?

They'll regret it. Companies that are perceived as taking advantage of COVID-19 related relief programs are getting hammered for it. Adidas and Shake Shack got called out and had to quickly retreat. Ruth Chris.

I've had talks with several companies debating whether to apply for/accept PPP money. Remember, a PPP Loan is not your rainy day fund. If your business isn't materially impacted yet, you don't qualify.
If you're able to make it without the money, but would feel better with the cushion "just in case," you don't qualify.
If you're telling yourself that you owe it to your investors to apply for the money because you want to protect their interests, and you owe it to them to get low cost/free money, you're rationalizing.
There's a very limited pool of money, and lot of need...if you take money that you really don't need, you're cheating others and are literally putting others out of work.
It's that simple.
Integrity is about doing the right thing even when no one is looking, but information about who gets these loans will be public, and there will be considerable scrutiny.
Now, more than ever, is the time to do the right thing.

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?

I recently started my first post-college job as a software developer and have to make a decision pretty soon: front-end development or back-end development. I really like being closer to the user and the creativity as far as front-end. But I also reallly really enjoy math and logic and the more complex side to back-end. My dream would be to do full stack but thats not an option. Scared of getting pigeon holed. Any suggestions as to what to do / tips?

Additional Posts in Ethics In Business

Hi everyone, wanted to come back and talk about the work environment at the Washington Redskins/Football Club -- the Washington Post story was pretty jaw dropping. One troubling angle was the use of NDAs to stifle victims. NDAs have for too long enabled bad behavior to continue, and it's time companies pledged to stop using NDAs in settlements with victims -- the coverup is worse than the bad acts. I think Warren torpedoed Bloomberg's campaign due to his use of NDAs. Thoughts?

I feel as though it discredits me and my advice because I’m not an attorney. How can I better differentiate compliance from legal and still provide valuable advice?

From what I understand, ethics is separate from legal. Legal violations have consequences, ethical violations don’t. What’s the point of ethics if there are no consequences? Sure when it’s convenient to be ethnical, everyone will be. It only matters when it’s not convenient. So should there be ethics set up with consequences like loss of job that applies evenly for everyone in the company including the CEO? Should their be financial consequences set up for smaller violations?
