Her feelings are valid. She said it in a very PR way, but ultimately she’s saying she found the black audience and execs too critical of romance stories and she didn’t want to fight anymore. She spent too long creating a story and she wanted it to be authentic the way she wrote it without making major changes.
A white audience tends to just accept it for what it is I guess when it’s for a mainstream audience. Versus if it was a black protagonist or even a black audience the writer would have to focus on being both cultural, romantically and socially right.
My personal feelings is “I can’t wait till we’re over this race shit, it’s exhausting on all ends”
The Idea of You was a good movie, but let's be honest: If she were committed to diverse storytelling, it would have started with the movie and not been an afterthought after its creation! It feels like a false narrative of future commitment is something we've all heard before.
