Three years ago, I left my insurance defense practice to open a franchise bakery because I thought I wanted a complete lifestyle change. Turns out, I actually miss law (and the steady paycheck), so I’ve sold the business and want to return to practice. I’m worried recruiters will think my legal skills have gone cold or that I’m a flight risk who will leave the moment I get bored. What’s the best way to spin my entrepreneurial hiatus as a strength?

I wouldn’t try to “spin” it, own it. You built and operated a business, managed risk, handled finances, negotiated contracts, and made high stake decisions. Those are valuable skills. The bigger concern for employers will be whether you’re committed to returning to law long-term, so be prepared to clearly explain why you left, what you learned, and why you’re confident this is the right next chapter. A well-told story can turn a career gap into a differentiator.

Hello recruiters, happy Monday!

I want to know why recruiters ask me in an interview if I am looking at other opportunities, or if I am interviewing at other companies. If I say yes they will ask at what stage I am.

I just want to know the reason behind it and if there is a right answer to this question!

Additional Posts in Ask A Recruiter - Law

I have an offer for $130k for a senior attorney position in a boutique L&E firm. Also have a recruiter who thinks she can get me into another for $150-170k. Both are more than I’ve ever made (Denver, 17 yrs of experience but completely different practice areas). Any tips for countering the $130k offer for more using the other potential offer while not risking a complete withdrawal of the current offer? I’ve never been in a position to bargain my starting salary so this is all very new to me.

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year.
