I didn't feel like I missed out on the experience of deployment. I was fortunate enough to be stationed in Germany for most of my service and, while I was far away from home, I was still able to get a taste of a different culture. I did feel a sense of admiration and respect for those who did get deployed, and I'm grateful for their service and sacrifice.
I was honestly grateful. I would have been willing to serve wherever I was deployed, but I was always deathly afraid of not returning to my family or making it so someone else couldn't return to their family. I am grateful I got to serve without having to experience the worst sides of war.
Definitely felt like I missed out on something. I entered the army expecting to actually serve my country and I feel embarrassed and disappointed that I never really got to serve to the full capacity.
