🤦🏾‍♀️ first of All I’m opening my own agency one day. I’m not waiting around for 5-10 years for “the man” to give me a title only to be taken away. I’m the Master of my own destiny I create my own opportunity. I’m simply learning the ropes, taking in every single moving part of the agency life including Account, strategy, production, etc...learning what’s important from each roll and will take it and apply it to my own.

Then one day I will employ some of you and will have my own fishbowl thread that you all can complain, judge, praise, nag, discuss salaries and drag me through the mud. #cantwait 😘

Im Tied of the POC this POC that and yes I’m black not Kanye Black but Jcole Black and No one will ever have the upper hand above me and stunt my growth I decide where how and what title I have.

Now CD that just got let go like Aaliyah said dust yo self off and try again.

like

It’s on the “to do list” Creative Director 2.

It’s Not about segregation it’s about #black ownership just because a POC owns a agency doesn’t mean it will be all black. I’m hiring whomever is smart enough and produces great work no matter what color they are. Sure I’ll be able to give POC more chances and look at their work without judging the color of their skin but the same treatment will be applied to all qualified smart people with amazing portfolios.

And very frankly it has nothing to do with being black or white for me it’s about “I’m giving you all these 🔥 ideas. And I only make 00,000 and whoever owns the company is making 000,000,000+ it’s simple math.

I want a bigger cut of the pie, especially if I’m up to the wee hours of the morning working in keynote/ indesign mocking up all the work putting in all the hours. I can apply all of that to myself and reap all the benefits. The biggest hurdle will be finding a actual client with big bucks to put on retainer but anything is possible.

So were they supposed to keep the person because they were POC? Genuinely conflicted about this post as diversity is such a desperately needed component of modern agencies, but should it shield you from a layoff? Maybe more context would help...

like

Wow, lots of microaggresion going on here. Being a person of color rarely ever works in your favor despite what trump’s America would have you believe. The fact that a poc became a Cewative Director in the first place is almost a miracle. They probably had to work 10x as hard to get half the recognition so I doubt they deserved to be let go. More than likely they simply didn’t have the client relationships because they couldn’t get into the white boys club. I’m at a huge agency that has preferably 0 poc creative directors and it’s completely demoralizing to see—but it’s the norm.

likesmart

Not to mention the bias of perception that could be at play here. Like Copywriter 1 said, those people probably have to work twice as hard to get into the CD role at all.

If you are white but judge purely on performance, you might need to consider that your judgement of that person’s performance is subjective. Many times we think we are being objective, but even well intentioned individuals probably have a bias. It’s hard to not have one in our society.

The best way to fight against this is to recognize bias and do your best to not foster it. Listen and support POC allies, use quantitative measures to assess performance but know that quantitative measures are skewed too. Bias may exist but it’s not the way it HAS to be. Recognize it and do your damndest to fight it because fighting it benefits everyone.

Yeah, more context needed. Was this a good CD? Was this a deserved layoff? I can’t imagine they laid this person off with the objective of being less diverse.

like

I worked with this creative director, he was great and knew the business. Personally, I’ve seen two creative directors of color “taken off the business” and fired while white creative directors are constantly moved around and accommodated. It’s bullshit because he was a great guy and while he may not always have agreed with his boss, he shouldn’t have been let go

likehelpful

Look I find it hard to believe they lay him off because of the race. Specially in this moment. Diversity and inclusion are crucial but not the only thing that matters.

There is a ton of academic research on the subject of how the dominant culture - white - negatively impacts POC. And that those of us whose culture is the dominant one don’t recognize it as such (see Sivers’ fish don’t know they are swimming in water analogy). Google Arline Geronimus if you want to read more. It’s both excellent and important.

like

None. Liz taylor won’t read these and neither will Susan credle. With a humongous creative department in a multi cultural city like Chicago, you have now just one ONE creative director of color and just one acd of color. It’s despicable. I’m ashamed to be a part of this agency, I really am, because the bias is so strong and unmissable.

like

I’ve been on this situation before although we kept the person anyway. Even though he was underperforming I had to let go of someone else (non-minority). I know we need more diversity, but I see everyone for the performance, not their color. Very conflicted

likesmart

One more thing. I found bias training helpful because it made me aware of behaviors rooted in discrimination that I didn’t even realize I was perpetuating. While knowing about bias doesn’t make it completely go away, I felt it was helpful in correcting these behaviors and gave me a different perspective. For those of you saying you evaluate someone on performance alone, you may find bias training helpful - especially if you manage someone.

The good: their diversity hires include the most women in leadership positions. The bad: they’re all white. And I will concede that hiring women is very important, true diversity is hiring more than one shade of leader.

like

I would whistle blow. But how, where? I’m honestly afraid of repercussions.

likehelpful

All of the above. Except op.

like

This issue of racism at FCB Chicago has been the subject of multiple threads here in the last months. If nobody brought this to Carters and Susan’s attention that’s too bad it would have prevented this.

like

According to multiple fishbowl post threads, this agency has a specific issue and it’s creative department with people of color. There is constant talk about bias against them that we don’t see from any other agencies employees. But clearly nobody with any authority reads these threads

like

I feel like I'm back in the end of the civil rights era... Somene in production text me they hired another black person, yay!!! Even though I was happy for them, it's sad that you can work anywhere they're able to recognize a black person getting hired... The mere fact it is exciting to see, is a problem.

But rarely will this happen in the creative department let alone a directing leadership position. Or it won't last long. I heard great things about that CD. One of the best but I guess, "one is not like the others..."

Don't attempt to climb too high in a system not setup for you. It has its tricks to bring you back down.

LB1 why is cisgender relevant here?

like

True diversity involves so many aspects, we are BARELY starting with gender and race.
OP, are you able to use your voice in any way over there to call attention to this? Not sure what your position and level of comfort is but if possible to start with baby steps, might be worth it. Or whistle blow anonymously
I know, I'm not being much help with this musing...

Ladies, how would you have responded? I was hanging out with a friend and her boyfriend when he suddenly goes “Now that all companies practice gender equality what is the need for women specific conventions like Grace Hopper. What if there were male specific conventions/conferences like that? How would that make you feel? “ I was very drunk and not proud of how I responded. I basically told him off and recounted all the instances where I have been at a disadvantage because of my gender.

Implicit bias is weird. (Whiskey bowl not only lawyers, so maybe that's part of it.)

What percent of those do you believe truly comes from the heart and a bias for both personal and corporate action, versus a necessary public relations response with little personal ownership? My view: about 30%. That is still a great number, because it’s far higher than zero.

Pros and cons doing a HDHP with HSA vs. regular PPO? Cost wise, I’m spending $18/month on the PPO and $20 copays per visit (I only usually do my physical and maybe 1-2 specialist visits). With the HDHP, I’d pay $0/month, would have to pay for each appointment given after $3000 deductible, but my company contributes $900 to my HSA. It estimates I’d pay $90/yr with the HDHP as I’d use the $900 to cover the costs vs. $345 with the PPO. I always see HSA emphasized here so confused what route to go

The worst creative I’ve ever worked with was just hired by W+K. Never made any decent work. Didn’t care about the work. We got awesome briefs creatives dream of and they wouldn’t lift a finger, putting extra work on the rest of the team. They mostly went unnoticed in the agency except by the people on their immediate teams who hated working with them. When we found out they were leaving, everyone assumed they got fired. So how does this person wind up at W+K?
