Rowing machine is superior to both
Row machine is superior. Or do weighted sled pushes or battle ropes. Those will get you winded real quick.
Really you need to measure your heart rate. I see people going really fast on the elliptical at the gym but they have it on no resistance. You can get a good cardio workout by putting the treadmill all the way on in line and walk at a pace on 2.7 mph (no hanging on).
