Rising Star
You can try for either path but if you don’t have pre-MBA consulting experience it’s going to be tough to get a strategy role in tech immediately after MBA
I see OP title is “management consultant.” So assume they have preMBA consulting exp
I am working at Microsoft in Sales engineering role. Wanting to get an MBA for the same path and having the exact same question as OP: 2 years at MBB first or directly into Strategy in Tech.
I have a similar goal. My advice would be enter the company you’re aiming for under a less competitive role and move internally to product management biz op strat
OP may I know what exactly does the corporate and product strategy roles do ? Curious how they differ too. Any good blogs that I can read to know about these roles?
Pro’s: (potential) equity upside and WLB
Con’s: standardized time at level (especially for MBA hire.
Joined 2.5 years after MBA at a at least a level higher than my MBA peers
Than it is a nice deal…google recruits basically single digit from any b school
Though not directly in tech i work in CS of one of the major payments companies; also joined out of school without any prior full-time consulting experience so this could still be useful for you
Pros:
Excellent exposure to top level management from the start
I’ve found the projects to be very interesting and impactful and they can be very varied depending upon how diversified the corporate is
Small group means its generally less hierarchal and more collaborative
If you know you would want to exit to a corporate, then it gives you much more exposure to the different types of roles available in a corporate so you have a better idea of what you would want to go into post CS
Cons:
Very few roles available which would take you without consulting experience so you may not get your first choice industry
Corp strat isnt generally a long term career in corporates so you should make sure you have at least some interest in taking up an operational role in some division there
You won’t join with a cohort of grads which limits social/networking opportunities
Corp strat groups programs are generally less recognised by recruiters which could limit exit opps especially if you would like to pivot industries
Overall I’m happy with my decision personally. I’d make sure that the corporate is diversified enough so you don’t narrow down your options too early, ow I’d say consulting is definitely the better play long term
Hope this help, happy to follow up if you have any more qs
