I’ve been told consulting is a giant stairway with the door to Partner at the top. When you open the door though there’s another stairway.

So yes agree.

But it does vary by person and firm. Smaller firms tend to be more egalitarian among Partners. At some firm you can get to a level where you can stay until retirement. Someone at their Big 4 firm said it was about impossible for them to get let go. But I imagine at McKinsey with its rigid structure and hyper ambitious people - it’s very much true.

True story. I realized both things to be true at the same time when I was invited into the room for a task group with our CEO. And then had to go out for the sandwiches for lunch. And it was an oddly specific order.

Of course. While I was the partner for the pyramid under me and was pretty much their end all, be all, I was at the bottom of the partner pyramid.

For the first 2-3 years I was the go-fer. Note taker in partner meetings, I got pretty much all the random tasks in my market that didn't clearly align with anyone else's portfolio, I got all the grunt work assignments, and so on.

What is the best time of the year to be in the notice period?

I mean what is the time of the year where requirements in most of the companies are at pick?

Like in Dec and March you will see less requirement due to Christmas and financial year ending. Similar what is the best period?

Because in my previous switch, 15 days were wasted due to Christmas and in March lot of requirements went on hold due to financial year ending.

What was discussed in the townhall today

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?

Partners, need some career advice. I'm in a niche BU at a big 4 focusing on risk related to certain cutting edge innovations in my industry (intentionally being vague). I'm being heavily recruited by a competitor firm to jump. I have just over 6 YOE, looking to promote in a little over a year (which would still be early at my current firm). To clarify, I'm not looking to leave, but will never say never. Firm looking to poach talks big game RE comp (potential to double my high 100s salary). Cont.

I've heard a couple of things about how the partner pension amount @ PwC is determined, both similar in approach.

Both calculations I have heard of result in an annuity paid until death, at which point a surviving spouse (if any) receives the annuity.

The first calculation I have heard is that you get 80% of your highest earning year as a partner (e.g. If your best year was $1M, you'd get $800k as an annuity).

The second calculation I have heard is that they look at your three highest earning years as a partner, and take the second highest and you get 100% of that. (e.g if your three highest earning years were $1M, $800k, and $1.2M, you'd receive $1M as an annuity).

Is ANY of this true, or just all rumor? Any PwC partners that can chime in and explain the pension plan fact for fact? Perhaps with sample numbers?
