That kind of planning is a recipe for unhappiness.
You’re already at the top of Q1 population comp. Plan with that number ahead, everything else is upside and you will very likely always have more than you budgeted and have many positive surprises.
Make a plan like the above, things will happen (Covid, trade war, company reorg) and you will at some point have less than planned. Best case is you’re disappointed and unhappy, worst case is you’re in financial trouble because of a too big house.
I appreciate the perspective! Great point that the lower expectations I set, the better life will turn out to be 😂👍
I’m 47. Some perspective:
You can at best plan or forecast 2 roles / 5 years ahead, and even that comes with a large margin of error. A 25 year forecast is just a wild guess.
Your assumptions are highly optimistic. Some reality:
- There are very few roles that pay $300k+. The Venn diagram of roles in this $ range that don’t require one to “work too hard” and that you’re going to be qualified for now and in the future with your background is extremely small. The number of these roles that are $500k+ is much much smaller.
- Most people’s career paths and income aren’t linear and aren’t always increasing.
- In the tech industry you’re more likely than not to be laid off by 50. Especially as a woman unfortunately.
- Similar to what Partner1 said use much more conservative assumptions and treat any upside as a bonus. You’ll be much happier this way.
Thank you, this is super helpful! Most people around me are in consulting, vc, or finance so I sometimes lose the perspective. I should be really grateful for the pay that I’m getting now knowing that there are few roles paying $300k+. Will def lower my expectations and focus more on living a happy life ✨
Subtract 100k from each of the buckets above and that would be a reasonable (still slightly aggressive) assumption
Okay i was clearly overestimating 😂
The only purpose of an exercise like this is ego stroking.
My response remains unchanged. You are daydreaming at best to map out a career progression like this.
I’m female but excluded maternity leave from the assumptions for simplicity
Interesting thought! My estimate would be to bring the figures down by $50k for all levels. This would assume ATC (base + bonus + annualized RSUs), and exclude further inflation.
Thanks for the input!
I’d say the continuous progression isn’t guaranteed so say something like 40% chance you flatten out and don’t continue to grow TC after 40.
Google has a lot of stay at same title for long time all over the place
Life isn’t this linear…you’ll see with time, but you might have entire decades where your income decreases
Are these 2024 constant dollars OP? Or nominal and including inflation? If the latter - how much do you think 600k 30 years from now will be equivalent to today?
This is assuming you don’t get laid off during the every 5 year layoff cycle most companies go though.
Fair point! I should bake that in my forecast model. Life throws you shit😫
I am a serious planner and do a lot of personal finance planning. But for my purposes, I have always been conservative and generally exceeded. As others have said, careers are not linear like that and impossible to map out. Now I am more stable, so model out to retirement. But earlier in life when looking at things like home affordability, most I would try to guess was 10 years (conservative) to make sure I wasn't biting off more than I could chew.
Everyone hating on these assumptions, am I the only one thinking this is a bit on the low end? I do work in finance so maybe my expectations are higher
Exactly. Director is already tough to get into and much more similar to Partner level (maybe for some AP but definitely not EM)
I’ll chip in- I’m 31 working as a Product manager in a non-FAANG company where odds of me being laid off of very low. Current TC is $330k. Assuming I stay here, I shouldn’t have an issue hitting each of those benchmarks. strategy/Biz Ops does pay lower, but this seems reasonable at least through $500k
How can I join?
The table shows your thinking. These creatures exist at McK ?
Creatures?! Shows your thinking
TC can be heavily based on rsus especially if you are at a director level or above. Otherwise merit/ promotion raises are minimal.
There’s another curve- plateau or decrease as with age as cheaper younger employees become more attractive than paying such a salary as premium for years of experience
I'm at 180k at age of 41 (after a recent 20% increase).... Somehow I feel like I'm winning even though these buckets make me look like I'm failing at life lol
