Well that is just insane. I’ve kind of reached a point in my career where I will just say ‘this isn’t what I do, you need to hire x-specialist’. If they aren’t hearing you… sounds like maybe run from this situation.
Thank you. It’s nice to hear some sense! I was questioning if this is a common editor skill nowadays. If you find an editor who is also a skilled animator/artist I hope you pay them well!!
First, I’m sorry you’re going through this. It sucks, you’re not a robot or a magician. But also, trust yourself and your skill set. You’re the one who knows the craft, lean into your expertise.
I’ve spent the last year at a place dealing with similar issues, it sucks and it’s hard to be new, especially when the status quo was set by someone else. Take any direction from account and creative with a fat grain of salt, they don’t know anything about production or how long things take. They don’t understand the house of cards youre building. I think a big part of the job in a big agency is learning how to educate others about our speciality instead of simply saying yes to every whim, it’s annoying for sure, but will hopefully give you some peace of mind in the future. Also, where is your producer? Lean on them to be the one to give bad news on deadlines being missed, unreasonable, or not in your wheelhouse. They can figure how to move the budget around to get a specialist to step in. But also, take care of yourself and remember it’s just an ad or whatever you’re making. we’re not saving lives here, it took me a long time to learn that, but once I did, my sanity came back. Good luck 👍
It really makes you appreciate a good producer. And a good team. Thank you for your kind words. I am actually impressed by the project I delivered in the end. But I won’t be staying with the company as this was just the tip of the iceberg.
Sounds a bit if a strange ask. Especially for an extended period. I always have to stay strong when my agency tries to put me on animation projects. While I can animate it's not what I want to be doing and don't care to become a animator so I have to always push back and say "no hire a person who has a passion for animation. "It's a big difference.
Across all the disciplines (film, doc, etc) advertising values editors the least. They don’t understand it and don’t want to understand it. Everyone has premiere on their laptop so how hard can it be?
Honestly a huge part of the job is educating people about the process. Protect yourself or you will get thrown under the bus when things weren’t planned or thought through.
And always, always leave a paper trail.
