Moved from Deloitte to BCG last year and main differences observed are:
- Speed to output - ppl produce slides/analysis way faster
- Structured thinking - work is done more top down, with a framework/structure to it (I wasn't part of strat/Monitor at deloitte but in regular consulting, we were never taught "how to think"...)
- Obsession with communication style - shorter emails, fewer words on slides, everything more to the point; also flow of information in a deck (the "storyline")
- A lot more responsibility - at Consultant (3yrs if starting as a grad), expected to be comfortable 1-on-1 with C-suiters of a large company incl. planning and executing meetings, completely owning analysis (e.g. often your analysis will get a once over from a partner and then go to a major stakeholder at a major company - no three levels of review of like deloitte)
- People are on average more driven/ambitious in their behaviours (note, in their behaviours, so could just be that deloitters are less overt about it...) - the high performance culture is real, as is "up or out"
- People also on average more curious - in my experience at deloitte, a lot were quite process types and didn't always care about implications/the why/the "so what"
So all in all, it's a faster, more intense, "on it" environment where people take ownership and just bang out high quality work non stop - I'm 6 mths in and def still adjusting
Background - started as grad in the actuarial team (part of consulting, but not strategy/ Monitor) and did 5yrs; moved to Transactions Services team (financial DD for M&A), covering FIs for 18mths, then BCG (now focused on insurance clients).
Interview process was per what's online, nothing to add really. Just make sure you can smash a case.
I imagine it’s like going from smart car to Tesla model S with ludicrous mode.
Also interested - why the perceived long hours?
