I love you OP
Wait is this actually a thing? My GF is a teacher and I couldn't care less. Higher dual income would of course be nice, but picking the person you date based on which consulting firm they're at? This is some next level shit right here lol
You definitely do.
Ha thanks, K1. How many love points do you have? Jk I think that that is prob a D thing to say...shit.
^ its cultural 😝.
D9- I work at kpmg . Not saying we are douche free. 90-10 is definitely manageable. Had a friend in grad school who was really bad in academics, wouldn't contribute to group projects but he had the self realization to admit his shortcomings and remained humble and well liked. Fast forward two years later, dude joined Deloitte and carries himself with a new found Nauseating attitude. Our friend circle wondered what has Deloitte done to him.
D9, go work elsewhere and see if you feel differently. I'm ex Andersen, PWC, and now Deloitte... It really isn't any different.
No worries. Good luck .
M2, the issue is that I could say those things as well. That is very much how it was before I became SM. Even now, I've given up metrics for the good of my peers. So I don't think it is as cut and dry as you make it seem.
D9, What level and salary? What I did was put myself on the market to see what I could get. When I talked with the competing firm, I realized it was more of the same. Then I asked D to match. They did and the rest is history.
That said, Deloitte is hard, but enjoyable.
They came within 5k, matched it within 2 weeks of approval. Ensured me that I was still bonus eligible.
Seems like it is low, I'd shop out around to see how the market values you.
I guess the performance models would be very similar. Things like utilization, sales credit, managed revenue, community involvement, people development, client delivery etc. Difference could be in whether core values drive metrics or metrics drive values. The latter will have an adverse ripple effect, ultimately compromising on the foundational elements on which the very company is built.
@d2 what do you mean
@digital consultant: how does it exactly matter if OP is a male or female? I am just curious
KPMG1 not going to happen! As I said you just have to find the right people, plus I'm pretty senior I can do pretty much whatever I want lol
Sometimes I wonder if I contribute to D's negative reputation on here. Hope not!
I've been reflecting on this this afternoon and I can come up with several parts of how the company is managed that would make people both competitive/prideful and have an inferiority complex. M2- where do you work? All I do is talk about D people in therapy every week. Maybe I should work where you work
M2- that's sad. Yeah, I'm not kidding- every week in therapy, it is like- this person dropped the ball on this and then blamed me even though I was the only one doing the work. I said to my husband before bed the other night, look, it has been a good run at D, but we have to be very careful that I don't let this place change me. Since they're both consulting firms, I wonder what KMPG does that D doesn't that encourages this. Also, I do think that D is so consuming that you kind of have to submit yourself to it like a cult if you want to survive. That really sucks about your friend- I'm sorry. If I might ask, what goes into his nauseating attitude? I want to compare notes to see if we hate the same things and so I can keep check on myself. Maybe I should hop to KPMG
Aww, I'm sorry, M2. It is funny- you're essentially summarizing what I discuss in therapy about D, but instead of letting the system change me, I keep my core in tact and then externally adjust when strategic. It can be exhausting and oppressive at times. There is a lot that I like about D and I like the idea of building a career here for many reasons, but recently, beyond the usual work/life balance stress, I an starting to question if the structural elements of D are healthy for me in the short and long-term. Frankly, I think that answer is that you have to game the system to be one of the few "chosen ones." If you can make that happen for yourself, you'll be made in the shade. Otherwise, you're just collateral damage, like your friend. I have recently obtained "chosen one" status for a few people, but we'll see how it can be leveraged during the next upcoming performance review cycle. If I get screwed, yet again, I'm going yo start considering other things. We shall see. Thanks for sharing your insight! It makes me sad that this is such an issue. There are some people whom I really like and would be friends with in real life, and then I feel like I meet back stabbing overachievement drones whom I can't trust and it makes me want to run in the other direction.
D10- I agree. Up until this point, I've assumed and accepted that it is the same across firms. It seems like Accenture might be a nice fit for me though. Other than that, if I leave, I'd leave consulting and go into something else entirely so that is why I stick it out here. I am concerned that sticking around will lead to my salary stagnating though. Do you think that that is a risk? I am pretty underpaid and I'm not sure that D will raise it to where it needs to be for a very long time, sadly
Btw, thanks for sharing your insight
M2- that is really amazing. Yes, I think that my biggest issue is that I run into people who do things only for their self promotion and don't work as team players. It's like, "oh, I got what I needed from this so screw the team. Good luck with that!" It leaves me playing catcher for everyone half assing everything. I recently had two analysts work for me and they were two of the best people I have worked with in the firm. I couldn't decide if it was bc they haven't been here long enough or if they just respected me bc of my title. Sigh, whatevs, thanks for sharing your story and perspective!
Ha- thanks! I wonder if D's performance management system (metrics and norms around it) differ significantly from the other firms and if that has something to do with it
