Going into the office for “productivity gains” when our team is spread across 4 time zones and I’ll be on Zoom calls all day.

Yeah, I have avoided this kind of workplace culture like the plague but I’m starting to see it take hold in my company. I’m being actively vocal about it because this was never the case in my almost 8 years with the company.
Very much a result of the culture, if leadership works long they expect everyone to work long as well (regardless of being paid 1/3 the salary…). Realistically things should get done within the allotted work time otherwise it’s a resourcing issue.
Used to think my coworker was nuts for leaving his work laptop at the office instead of bringing it home but I really respect the boundaries and discipline, something to work towards.
I’m a PhD student in my final year, and I thankfully already secured a good job after graduation in 2026. But the whole time PhD is all about how much you’re willing to suffer for your thesis/paper/research.
Congrats on almost being done and already having something lined up. 👏
What does logging off early mean though? If there's plenty of work to do and you're working a 5 hour day leaving everyone else to pick up the slack - that is worth feeling guilty over. If it means logging off at 5 and not doing extra work that's different.
I think you misunderstood my response. Leaving at 5 = no reason for guilt. Logging off super early (1 pm for example) when there is more to do isn't cool
