200k+
PI firms don’t follow traditional “years” with lockstep salaries…. you’re going to get wildly different answers based on location, firm size, volume etc.
But to try to answer your question, I’m a 3rd year at a large PI firm in NYC greater area making probably just over $200k this year, estimated $235k next year.
A2- What’s your caseload and comp structure like?
6 years of experience. High cost of living area. Been with my firm for a little over a year. $130k base and 5% of the fee commissions. 1/3 of the fee in cases I bring in. 80 cases, 30 in litigation at any time. Made $190k last year without any big cases settling yet and only brought in 3 cases that have yet to settle. We move our pre-litigation cases very quickly so that’s a big plus. Wish my commission was higher but it’s hard to complain. I only work about 35 hours a week, 4 of those days remote
I agree. I actually offered to take $100k base but with a higher commission cut and they wouldnt budge
To piggyback what A1 & A2 said, you’re also going to have origination fees that are separate from the commission on cases that are earned.
A 4-5 year comp structure in a HCOL area could be something like 150k base, 10% of attorneys fees on all cases worked on, and 1/3 of all attorneys fees from cases brought in by the associate.
Again, this could go a bunch of different ways, but like A2 said, I wouldn’t advise just getting a base salary; no matter how high it is.
Your focus should almost entirely be on the commission, especially origination if you’re comfortable going out and bringing business in.
3rd year, HCOL, 125k base, 5% of the fee for litigation, 15% of the fee pre lit, 1/3 of the fee on what I bring in. About 30 litigation cases, 50 pre lit cases. Since I’m the youngest at the firm most of my cases are small MVAs. I do have a handful of good cases though. Probably going to make about $170k total this year at this rate.
4th or 5th year*
Echoing from above.
Years 3-4, earned $165k, $240k (origination case settled big)
This year im probably going to make $140-$150k.
Im at a small small firm in soflo, 5th year going on 6.
Our 5th year will make 150k, I am year 14 and I will hit 350k
Yeah i am 5th, about to be 6th year. Just curious.
I am 1 year back into PI, though. Been handling property ins claims. How have you been successful getting leads etc? I am a first generation atty and fairly new to my region (only went to law school/live here 6 years or so).
I get radom calls from friends/family but that's not sustainable. Doctors/chiros only seem to do case for case, which is also not reliable.
