What are realistic exit options for an IRS Office of Chief Counsel attorney working in SBSE or LB&I? From what I understand the flow is typically from firms to OCC, but do tax boutiques and/or large firms generally look favorably on IRS OCC experience?

There are firms that only hire former IRS so that they can say they are all "former IRS lawyers." They feel that it gives them a marketing edge, but I am not sure how much it matters to clients.

Ooops, fyi, I meant "mill for tax work" in case anyone is scratching their heads

Yes, this is great experience to have. Get technical but not so senior in your career. The main issue firms will have is can you make the transition from just technical work to client relationships. More issues at a firm, project management, delivering work on a tight schedule. Time sheets, billing, pro formas, business development. It won't just be about how good you are as a subject matter professional

If you’re on the fence about jumping to another firm or starting to look elsewhere, realize that loyalty is often only skin deep in consulting. Prioritize your career goals, whether they be financial otherwise. Praise and appreciation are nice, but don’t let ANYONE make you feel bad about choices you make for your happiness.
