Make sure they offer you full partnership, not Executive Director (ED) or Managing Director (MD), which have much lower Comp and benefits.
I was ED at EY several years and it sucked. Dead end.
B4 Partner here. Yes the compensation is greater in the B4 and yes you tend to put in more hours in order to earn the compensation. That’s the sacrifice. The compensation along with the prestige and overall satisfaction of serving the largest clients with the most complex issues is worth it to me and thousands of other B4 Partners. Only you can decide if it worth it to you and your family.
I would definitely weigh family needs vs career drive over next 5 years. I’m just probably nearing the end of my high involvement, little league coaching, camping, etc phase of fatherhood and wouldn’t trade the flexibility I’ve had over the past 5 years for any amount of comp or to be back at my B4 firm. that said I’ve still had time to be successful in running my group and practice at my mid-firm. And, at least I don’t feel like, I’ve compromised my compensation greatly. At least that’s the impression I get from my friends that stayed.
Can you explain how bad the difference was at the big 4? More travel? More hours working at home? Dropping everything for client deadlines?
A long list of things for you to consider....both quantitative and qualitative. I have hired nearly 10 lateral partners in my career. This really warrants a discussion that is much more in depth than anything any of us can write.
One quick item to ensure you fully understand.....are young enough to fully vest in the new firms retirement benefit. I have seen laterals move through the process without understanding what they may be giving up.
Good luck!
I couldn’t agree more. Also, understand what you are giving up at your existing firm.
I left EY for a smaller firm and do think that was the right choice for me. Understanding your firm/practice's real culture and values - not always the public and external ones - and balancing those against the ones you hear about at the new firm are key. To me, it was really critical to make sure I could align my personal and career goals to the right firm.
Being a partner/md at a B4 definitely has its prestige. I would imagine the pay is more than regional?
Yes the pay is better at B4 but how much are you selling out your free time for it? Is B4 worth that? Or is the time demand not much more than top 10 firm?
Thank you guys for input. Appreciate it.
For me EY is the right firm . There are several differences in Big 4 partner vs any other situation. There is a prestige difference, there is a Comp/ pension difference. There is a clear expectation difference . Find what is right for you and your family. No one right answer for everyone
Well EY came with offer here. Money was less than I make now. I guess that makes it easier of a decision. Funny they said they had the checkbook ready.
I’d like to hear more if you are open yo sharing. Can you message me to discuss?
What is the pension vesting period at EY?
