How do you handle it when you notice differences in attorney billing styles, without throwing someone (billing much more per task) under the bus? I want to bring it up with partner but unsure if/how.

I’d file this under not your business unless you’re the billing partner. Any questions about your own billing can be asked without reference to others.

like

You should be billing the time it took you to do the task. It seems like you're considering adjusting your time up to match the other person, which is unethical.

likefunny

Who is billing too much? This is really the partner’s call

like

If you are unsure about your own billing (under billing is a thing, and I wish someone had talked to me about it when I started), then ask a partner what is appropriate. Generally partners will mark down your time if they think it’s excessive- it is not our job as associates to decide a task took us too long so we should underreport our time

like

Chances are, no need to say anything. They see all the bills for the cases put together (through a different lens than you do). They likely already know what what

like

It can take two people a different amount of time to do the same task. I’m sure there are things that you do more efficiently than the other person. If anybody has concerns about how long you’re taking to do things, you’ll hear about it directly from the partner or in your review. Don’t cut down your time, and try not to worry about it. Spend as long as you need to to do the job!

This is the partners decision. I really wouldn’t bring it up. And perhaps the person billing more is doing a more thorough job than you.

Ignore my title, I'm an analyst.

I've been working here for over a year and my associate basically never does a thing. I get I'm the analyst but I'm the only one on my team. I pull together every page.

My associate does minimal reviewing, if even, usually it goes straight to my vp. And even my vp has pulled pages together.

Is it valid to ask my vp to chat about this? I'm not even expecting a 50/50 but pulling even 1% of the pages would make me not want to shoot myself
