What are your average billable hours? Month / year? What type of practice are you in? Are you on the Cravath scale? What associate year?

2016; average about 155-165 per month; large Midwest market, so not Cravath

180/month, 2050 per year, but I usually bill 200/month for that sweet sweet bonus. Insurance defense work.

Wow this is wild to read 😳. Yearly billable target is 1500. I appreciate my target a lot because I do about 600-700 hours of non-billable work/year (writing articles for publications, lecturing at the college of law, presenting at conferences, etc.).

I’ll let you know once the school year is done and I’m finished teaching at the college of law on top of lawyering all day 😂😫.

I’m a first-year associate at a small insurance defense firm. 1800 billables per year. Raise evaluation mid-year. Raise hinges upon quality work product and whether billables are on track.

No billable requirement. Big law, cravath scale, guaranteed above-market bonus regardless of hours. My self-imposed target is ~2100.

I am considering transitioning from being a W2 employee to a independent contractor/1099. What are some important questions I should ask before making a decision? For context, I have been with my litigation firm for just over 3 years and have been barred for 4. I am doing fine, but I dislike the job and would like to reduce my hours (and get rid of some of the non billable work I have to take on). Ideally, I would transition to a job that I love, but I’m not sure what that is yet. Cont. below.

This year has been insane. 200+ hours every month. July has been really been slow though. I’m at like 35 billable hours this month. I’m a first year in transactional and staffed on deals that haven’t picked up yet. I’m hesitant to reach out for work because I don’t want to be overwhelmed ... but I also am getting anxiety because I literally have nothing to do all day. Anyone else in this boat?

First year here at midsize. What to do if I ask for work but none is given. the past few days I’ve had 1-3 billable hours too. Apparently it’s slow for some ppl. There was also some lay offs as well.. Wonder if I should also start looking at jobs now just in case.

Im a third year associate and I’m frequently asked to give presentations (on new case law, legislation, ect.) during a weekly meeting for my section. There’s a first year associate and a law clerk in my section who are never asked to present. Should I push back on this? Would it look bad if I delegate some of the work to the others? I spend a lot of non billable time prepping for these presentations...it seems unfair that I’m the only one who has to do them.

When your boss gives you 48 hours (clock hours not billable hours) to produce a viable objection to a MTD/compel arbitration in a complex commercial lit case, which is not my practice area, what kind of result is he expecting? From scratch, no template.

So I have completely lost interest in my area of practice mainly because I haven’t been exposed to many matters (our team is really slow) and I am the most junior in the team. So billable work is never constant. I feel like this has impacted my interest and stagnated my growth. I am thinking of moving into a different area of practice like TMT or PE, that I’m interested in. Has anyone ever done this? I’m actually depressed and I really hate being given work now. I have ADHD. Please advise

Two of my really good friends at work have had their work dry up in the past few months (because of the Rona). I'm like two months ahead of them on hours, and they're worried about not making their minimum billable requirements. Feel sort of guilty and try to avoid talking about hours with them. I'm just hoping the firm doesn't give them trouble...

Hi guys, I had an interview for an SDE 2 in the Bay Area. The recruiter came back saying they can only offer an SDE 1 position, and currently the team I interviewed for does not have any open positions at that level. The recruiter mentioned that they have sent out my application to multiple hiring managers and as soon as they hear back they will let me know. Has anyone else ever dealt with getting downgraded for a position and then hung out to dry?

A firm said they’d like to receive applications from and interview more candidates before making a final decision on my interviews. Does this mean they are unlikely to offer as they want to see other candidates who may be better?
