What are your favorite and least favorite parts of being an engineer? My favorite part is the problem solving and my least favorite part is how long some projects take.

I'd say my favorite part is that I'm always learning something. You can never get too complacent because something will come along that you need to learn as best you can. I'd say my least favorite part is just dealing with paperwork and bureaucracy. Getting people to sign off and approve things, that can just crush whatever enthusiasm you have for a project.

Favorite: The longer you’re in a role, the more efficient you get at it. If you’re worth your weight in salt, once you begin to develop a deeper understanding of your tasks you’ll naturally challenge their procedures and output then work to improve them. Especially if you inherit managing a set of work tasks that have been long established. You’ll eventually get to a point where things that took hours or days to complete are executed in a fraction of the time. Then you can choose to cruise (and make the same money).

Least favorite: The higher-ups never really ask questions unless something goes wrong (that they hear about). Part of this, depending on the company, is due to leaders being trained to “always find opportunities for improvement” (ie. the dark side of continuous improvement…nothing can ever work “too good”). There’s rarely any appreciation of the effort it took to solve a problem/achieve a goal. All that matters is that the metric(s) were met. As a result, more often than not, great work product is not rewarded with better opportunity/compensation.

I love problem solving and creativity that goes along with it. I don’t like how stifled the creativity can get in the work environment sometimes.

I have to agree with you. I hate how long some of these projects drag on for because some of them really shouldn't take all that long. But I do love using my problem solving and critical thinking skills and I also really like the team that I work with.

I learn something new during every project. While sometimes the learning process is stressful, I appreciate not having a stagnate job. My least favorite part is having to make tough decisions without the entire support of my facility at times. There's always someone who tells you the call was bad, but sometimes no one is making a call at all.

I'm at an early stage tech start up and gaining experience in an industry that I like. However, I am getting no formal training or sales coaching. Everything I've done so far (Inc. Looking to get into SaaS sales but my experience is in construction and fine furniture (I was a sales manager and was able to lead my team of 4 people to consistently hit 450k monthly targets). I have also considered a sales analyst role considering that I am moderately versed in Salesforce and have worked both the customer facing and sales generating side. TIA!

Or should I continue down the field path and wait until those field management slots open up?
