COLLINS, Redscout, Sylvain
Most big brands don’t need new identity that often. Those projects are very rare. Wpp combined its designs shops, because the work (that pays a lot) is just not there. Collins and other do a lot of non design work too. Pure play design agency is not a good business model. Pentagram survives because it’s like 20 partners each with their own 3-7 person teams.
i guess we can do a better job at highlighting our strategy work!
I’ve always been a huge Sylvain fan. From the outside it seems they really care about the quality and rigor of strategy and stay committed to strategy as a practice and product vs means to creative output. Plus Joey is the nicest guy.
I strongly believe Strategy is always in service to creative, and that if it’s not, it’s just strategy for strategy’s sake—boring and uninspiring. I think it’s possible to do rigorous, quality strategic work, while still being a means to creative output.
Collins. Fundamentalco. Redscout. Co:Collective. Wolff Olins. Landor has a good CCO and that should open some opportunity there. I think the holdco-owner brand consultancies have a challenge because they were meant to be the tip of the spear for the rest of the holdco, but now that roles has gone to media and data agencies.
Yeah.. it’s weird that Publicis doesn’t have a branding agency. I guess there’s Turner Duckworth but they’re purely design. Love Wolff Olins. Haven’t looked at Redscout in a while but my understanding was they didn’t do design.

I’ve been keeping an eye on smaller, innovative agencies like Base Design and Pentagram, seems like they’re making some exciting moves! It’s definitely been a tough couple of years, but I think branding and design are bouncing back as companies focus on identity and connection post-pandemic. I'm also curious to see how WPP and Omnicom evolve!
