My path was unconventional. Leaders tapped me and encouraged me to apply for a people leader position. Lead my peers. It wasn’t on my radar but ended up enjoying it.
If you are person who genuinely like and want to develop people… it’s great. If you don’t actually like people and just want to advance your career …skip it. It will irritate you and those you lead.
I got thrown off the deep end way too early. In my current company, I went back to being an individual contributor and took advantage of the training opportunities offered by the company. My management style now is very different to the first time around, and for the better.
My advice:
* build your skills in your role
* look for opportunities to mentor
* take a course on coaching (sooooo many of these are available, including low cost and free resources online)
* talk to people who have been managers - including your own manager if you have that kind of relationship
I started entry level as a laboratory technician and have always had the drive to lead others. I’m organized and naturally lead. I’ve worked my way up within our company leading larger and larger teams. I also lead client projects for some time. I’ve been lucky to have leaders around me that have seen my worth, but I am where I am from hard work and dedication.
Grew nearly every team I worked on by at least 3X in terms of revenue. More people came as a result of more demand and value creation per person. If you focus on outcomes and delivering them while being a good person to work with, the people leadership, the money, the promotions will follow.
