Really harsh and you have a staffing problem.
I've also had to remind people the PTO request process is not just for show, and that requests can be declined, but that'a not how you do it.
Having said that, declining a request is only really an option when people are clearly taking the mick. E.g. a last minute 10 days PTO request for a cheap cruise, when the individual was supposed to deliver a key feature they were already late on.
I would add that it’s subject to business needs. If 80% of the team has requested the same or similar PTO, it just might not be tenable. That’s not a staffing problem - what business commercially can be staffed to have that spare capacity?
Agree that the comms in this case are out of line, and similarly I have had to remind team members to follow the process.
Def harsh. Sounds like a staffing issue that needs to be fixed. PTO is PTO.
That’s terrible and toxic.
Definitely not the intent of the structure.
I would document a complaint with HR. If this manager is going outside of company policy then it’s not ok. If they are following policy then not much you can do other than look for a new job.
Comes off so bad that it isn't even funny. We do have a structure where you have to request a PTO and it does have to be approved, but usually isn’t a big deal. That being said though, phrasing it in this way is one of the worst things I can see. Devalues that time off that is a part of your compensation for working there!
If they are having a staffing issue now, wait until everyone processes that email
That's for sure a toxic work environment. You better start looking elsewhere.
This manager obviously is creating a toxic work place for the team. He/She is burning out the team and is requiring their availability and is stating that he will let them go if they have to take time off. Where will this manager be if the team decides to walk out and leave the company because they are burned out and decide to find a job somewhere that appreciates the work being done. We all need time to refresh. We know it can be difficult to find a new job but it is difficult to fill these roles as well.
I agree that this isn't the way PTO issues should be addressed. It creates a toxic work environment for employees at all levels when a manager talks to employees this way. If the company also provides Sick time as part of the compensation package the employees can take that instead of PTO. This manager should've explained why the requests were denied. Were there a lot of requests for the same day? Are these dates a company wide blackout period? When were the requests submitted? As managers we have to follow company policies and unfortunately there are times PTO will be denied. Regardless of the reason we should all talk to each other with respect.
