McKinsey & Company Hi everyone. Hope all is well.
Recently took the McKinsey & Company game (not sure if I have an interview yet but preparing nonetheless). It’s an entry level business analyst position and an entry level digital position and was wondering if anyone wanted to case prep with me. I’m willing to work on anyones time zone. (I’m located in Sydney, Australia).

You manipulate terrible data into readable format for the person above you to analyze. Create a databook. Slap it onto a PPT. Cry and look forward to the weekend, only to get booked on another deal and have your weekend go up in flames. You just canceled date night for the 5th time in a row. Your partner leaves you but you don't care, you have EBITDA adjustments to find. Besides, there's a more important partner in your life. The FDD partner wants a trial balance by Sunday night and you can't let them down.
You've worked more than your peers in audit. You see the interns excited to work in "finance" and you cringe. You comfort yourself by saying "at least it's not audit," even though you realize that's an incredibly low standard and doesn't justify the hours or pay.
Realize you're expected to be on call like a banker but get paid a bit more than an auditor. You tell people you work in M&A or finance, but the PE firms you work with call you "the accountants" and it's true: you're a glorified auditor. A lot of deals are already good to go and you're brought in as a final check. Sounds a lot like... audit? Oh wait, is that an EBITDA bridge? You briefly delude yourself into thinking you're in finance or consulting, only for that perception to come crashing down when you're asked to translate a million rows of standard cost data into COGS. Say hello to your best friends: INDEX MATCH and XLOOKUP.
Rinse and repeat until you leave for FP&A or if you're more ambitious, go for IB or
corp dev, with potentially an MBA along the way.
Why you need index match if you can just replace it with xlookup?
Format spreadsheets at 2am while pretending to work in finance. All while being called "the accountants" by the actual finance people in PE firms.
Bdo comp drags behind market. Other firms are taking your lunch
I’ve been in FDD for 9 months and it’s a lot of data formatting/looking at trends in the business. Hours are better than audit, I average ~45 hours a week. It does fluctuate a lot though. Near report deadlines I work up to 60 hours or so, but some weeks I’m unassigned and have 0 hours of work. I watch TV, workout, hit golf balls, etc., while keeping my work phone on hand.
Overall, very glad I made the move. Work is more interesting than audit (no internal controls), but still very accounting focused. Money is also better. I am nearing 3 years of experience and make $118k as an S1.
M1 is like ~$157k base. I don’t know about SM1 but I would imagine it’s around $175k or so.
I’m in CMAAS (switched from audit) and love it. I work on IPO’s, acquisitions, and also random accounting advisory. I like the change, my clients value my input, and everyone I’ve worked with here has been great. I even have wlb finally, as I consistently work 40-45 hours a week and rarely weekends. Dm me if you want more info but I’m super happy
It’s very project specific. I’ve been lucky to get on the ones I’m on. I work with people all over the east coast. I’m not sure what I would do it it was more than 40-45 hours consistently.
