Any advice on how to make an internal transfer from External to Internal Audit without leaving?
The company I’m at has a career mobility program. I’d search your company’s internal site for a similar program. You could also post in your company bowl and see if someone can point you in the right direction

Identify and evaluate significant risks that could affect the company's ability to achieve its goals.
based on my experiences, internal audit is very important department.
1. Internal audit will ensure that all the SOP in the company is followed
2. If anything happened like cash stolen, internal audit will be the 1st PIC to investigate and help police to identify the thief. Internal audit will find the loops on how the things can happened.
Internal audit will not a favor department to the the other department because internal audit will always become management person to ensure every rules is followed.
Internal Audit varies largely from company to company. Most IA departments are really just compliance departments - ensuring policies are followed, testing SOX and such.
Some large companies have IA departments that focus on operational audits. Each audit is new. The audit program is blank and you develop it as you gain an understanding of the risks and related controls then figure out how to test them. It can be a really interesting career where your negotiation skills and ability to assess what matters will advance greatly and the traditional auditing part is mostly perfunctory.
