What happens to your 401k when you leave without it being fully vested? I left my company without it being fully vested and looks the same to me. I didn't have it transfer over or anything. Just sitting in the original fidelity account. When does it get adjusted? Or did I luck out by keeping it in the original account?

I left IQVIA 2 years ago and it's still there. I fully assume it will be removed eventually. With a previous employer, it took them 5 years to remove it.

If i remember correctly, if you return to IQVIA your tenure for the vesting schedule will pick up where it left off. So if you think you might go back, probably worth keeping the 401k as is if you stand to gain a decent chunk of money if you return.

like

Oh good to know it takes time for it to be removed. I think your vested after 1 year for IQVIA so I should be good if I do leave. I was thinking about my previous company, PRA Health Sciences, where it takes 3 years i believe.

What about RSUs?

Companies retain your 401(k) for a set number of years by law in case you return. Depending on the state you live in, they’ll take it back at the end of that lock out period.

Everyone has a different perspective on this but would love to hear yours. Someone has debt ranging say 4-5% interest rates. Do you attack debt more then investing to move towards a debt free life or do you go after investments since they return historically above that then paying down closer towards retirement. I know the latter looks better on paper but what about the psychological factors of being debt free and the guaranteed return on interest savings.

Is it too late in our lives to jump into a mortgage?

So my fiancée and I are relatively late in terms of finally landing well paying jobs and being able to save money instead of living paycheck to paycheck. We’re both 36 and currently rent a 2 bedroom in NY and have a combined savings of $35,000 which she wants to use as a down payment on a condo. I kinda just wanna continue saving while renting. I also literally just started contributing to my 401K so I’m also late in the game for that too.

I have cash to put a large down payment to avoid the high rates but am scared I have no roots and will move in another few years.
