SM5?!? If you're not making MD by year 5, you might want to consider a different career track.
@A2 is that a joke? The % of SMs who make MD in 4 years or less is defintely the minority.
Several of my peers are not up and in year 5 and 6. Also I think it depends on the OG.
More than 145 and less than 220
Really depends on OG and if you are an experienced hire or not
4 years is the standard.
Ok regardless of up or out at yr 4 or 5, with the new standardized levels I was looking to see if anyone knew where "new" and " seasoned" SMs land in terms of salary.
I'm on a diamond client with 30+ SMs and can assure you it's extremely rare for a SM to make MD in 4 years.
Perhaps. My OG stresses a decision to move to the IT&L track if you aren't up for MD by year 4.
@OP what city
A3 NYC
Officially the floor is prob $130K but realistically you're prob at least $140K as a SM1. (As you probably know, hardly anyone is at the floor or ceiling they give at any level.) An experienced SM can be up in that $200K range or more.
So if I'm an experienced hire manager currently at M3 and $170k it sounds like it may be tough to get much of a bump when moving to SM. 🤷🏻♂️
You'll get a bump but might only be like 12%
Most NYC SM's start at $190k
Should clarify. MC SM's***. At least 3 of the CSG's use this as the start point.
Thanks for the info, very helpful. Any ideas on realistic bonus %s?
Tough to say given that it varies so much by year, based on individual performance, firm performance, etc. other avenues of revenue to consider that you don't get at Big 4 is stock. SM are eligible for "special contribution" awards at bonus time which is usually ~$18k in RSU's.
SM global bonus will be higher than corresponding M global bonus for same performance contribution. Individual bonus will be lower. In total ends up being more. Plus you're eligible for RSUs at SM level as A2 mentioned. Just keep in mind, SM peer pool is much more competitive than M pool. But even with a CW rating as a SM1 and SM2 I got a 10% bonus each year.
A3 Was that 10% total with the RSUs? Even last year as an M2 I got 12.5% total bonus.
