Coach
So let me understand this: you have one year and a half of work experience, and are looking for a senior director role? A good friend of mine who was a Principal at BCG exited as a Senior Director in a big pharma company.
To be fair it depends on the company. A friend of mine who was an EM at McKinsey exited as a senior director. But that’s someone with plenty of consulting experience pre and post MBA. Not 18 months.
PhD does not work the same as MBA - it doesn’t allow you to magically skip numerous years.
Wait- you have a PhD and 18 months of consulting experience and that’s all? You aren’t a director, my friend. Senior Manager is probably more like it. Maybe Associate Director at a small company.
^^ this. I did Ph.D., postdoc, and exited from BCG PL1 to AD. Know of a few ADC C2's who also were able to exit to AD. Have you talked to your career services person? They have all the benchmarks.
Haven’t brought it up at BCG yet, but will do when the time comes. Thanks!
OP, assuming your question is serious and all you have is 1.5 years of experience, director is incredibly unlikely to happen. Even senior manager will be a stretch.
Not that there is anything secretive about it, but if you want to chat in more detail, DM me and we can talk about what’s reasonable from my point of view.
Thank you all! I’ve had 2 recruiters from pharmas reach out to me and the roles have been Director and Senior Director.. which to me made no sense!
Depends on level of content expertise required... ops and marketing maybe SM. R&D is best bet for higher level, if you can leverage phd background on the content side
Like many are saying, unless its a startup you are 5+ years away from director level roles. Manager roles, Sr. Mgr would be a stretch.
