I have a buddy going to Merrill and is getting paid $250k/year with the goal of having $60m end of year. He probably will take $15m from the call center MAX. What is the catch here?

I'm currently working for a startup that has been unable to pay us for 2ish months while they are trying to secure investor funding. They said they will back pay us and (we're working much fewer hours) and they were reaching into their personal savings for months before and never took a salary.
