What piece of advice would you give your younger self going into a security related field? I’ll start, I wanted to go into forensics, malware or law enforcement. I didn’t do enough research on salary and demand. It’s underpaid for the skills required. By the time I figured that out I had invested about a year and thousands of dollars.

I would say don’t. The field is already oversaturated, and you’ll end up in a career field where you generally aren’t appreciated and are a cost center. Go into tech sales or something else imo.

This 100% We need more major cyber attacks to happen to shift that attitude toward NEEDING and EMPHASIZING security rather than ugh fine I guess we'll buy some security tools.

Not one recruiter/hiring manager has ever said wow your cyber knowledge will benefit our company. Morons.

I’m in big4 forensic tech, started in September. Your staff 1 year is your easiest year, but I see how hard my coworkers work and how stressed my coworkers are. They are compensated well, but especially for the seniors/managers/senior managers, they are often stressed with lots of projects and spend most of their time working around the clock. They don’t get lots of family time or personal time.

A lot of tech consulting jobs are like this as well.

Please do yourself a favor and choose another career path.

You’re over there living my early dream. I was learning FTK, Encase, forensics on Windows. Military was paying for all my classes. Windows is just full of hidden snitch files. I got a job at state police, was heading to the FBI next. It was 12 years ago, that 75-100k a year wasn’t gonna cut it. Most of what I learned was valuable though. I jumped to Nike instead and doubled my salary. Being a developer with security background paid well.

If you want to do hands on technical stuff do not do IT Audit and or Information Assurance. These jobs are for the people you went to college with who took the team lead roles and did the project management stuff while others on the team did the coding building the network database etc. IT Audit and IT Governance type jobs will tell you as a college hire that you will be working with all types of cool software and tech but you won't. You will just be writing and doing documentation about it.

Don't buy management and recruitment line that you can do anything at a company just by requesting a transfer. That rarely if ever happens unless you are connected.

Pick the job doing what you want to do. Don't worry so much about the company brand name.

Don't be careless with your money. Being in debt with nothing saved up puts your job your money your stuff in charge if you vs. Having low expenses and savings puts you in charge of your life. Minimize debt and get rid of it asap. So many people work jobs they hate because they don't manage their money and in return it manages them!

Good point about debt. Took me awhile to figure that out. There is so much pressure to look successful. Took many more years to pay off a house, truck, credit cards. What it all bought me was low stress and freedom. I can take a pay cut, switch careers, do my own thing, go travel, whatever. Best thing I ever bought was freedom. Thanks for sharing!

Switching from commission to salary!

I’m considering a less sales-oriented role that doesn’t pay commission. The new role will have a higher base but lower overall earning potential.

What % haircut should be expected? As an example, if I make 100k (base + commission) today, would it be realistic to ask for 90k (10% cut) + equity to make up the difference?

The client and coworkers were all nice, but I remember being stressed on the project due to limited resources.

So engineers can now automate the writing of basic code, and potentially more complex tasks, by using GPT-3.

For those who are technical: If machines can write code, how are you going to upskill? And what are the best ways make yourself indispensable?

I am not embracing the notion that you shouldn't have to code to do data science. However, I think coding may soon be much less of a competitive advantage.
