Most of PE mega fund associates have way bigger egos. Have you seen the Saturday dinner crowd at Dorsia?
A1... I’m not sure what 21 year old developers you know in consulting claiming to make $200k... but they’re lying to you
You’re comparing apples to oranges
You asked for SALARY, not TOTAL COMP.
How does an MD make 300k but a 21 year old dev can make 200k 12 years earlier I am new to this but I don’t understand the massive disparities even acknowledging the difficulty in being a top performing dev but it seems like half the cs grads are almost hitting 200k
@K1 - I sure hope not. We make that much as directors at KPMG. I’d expect it to be over 300...otherwise, why bother
We could also use all-in comp, which is probably what you’re referencing with the 200k number (and still probably exaggerating in most cases). All in for a high performing MD is probably more like $450
Not consulting devs just msoft fb google etc
K1 has it right for “salary”
K1 and K2 - the numbers K1 quoted are reflected in my paycheck. Commercial side.
Big4 or Accenture?
300k give or take.
Depends on market. 225-250 in many places
A1 is right
Where do you live? NY/SF? I’m a Director up for MD. I don’t expect 300K. Glassdoor average is 288k which is not just "first year”. I know of no 21 year olds who earn 200k.
A2 - factor in cost of living. Then factor in scarcity of good talent for a MASSIVE need. Software is all consuming. Being an MD is tough and takes time to develop a network, but these software companies literally need thousands and thousands of engineers in order to stay afloat and competitive.
Hiring a software engineer is like adding a machine to the shop floor for production. The demand is massive and everyone needs more machines that won’t breakdown and cause quality issues.
Supply and demand is why those devs can claim that much. Keep in mind much of that $200k may be tied up in equity that doesn’t immediately vest
The $200k is total comp (base, stock, sign on bonus, relo, etc.) at large tech companies like the FANG’s and Microsoft etc. But likely closer to 150k and older companies like HP, Intel, etc.
FANG (Dev and Product Managers)/ PE/IBD/HF all have 21-25 year olds pulling in 200k Even MBB at third year can hit 200k post undergrad all in. Therefore it’s no surprise. It’s sad when you see a MD at ACN or Big 4 with an ego when there is probably a 25 year Blackstone PE associate associate pulling in way more haha I agree it’s apples and oranges. There is no point in comparing.
