This is the hardest thing when it comes to Financial Planning (FP). I ways tell people that FP is broken into 2 parts. Math and behaviors/relationships. The math part is really easy. It's basic arithmetic. Now, behaviors and relationships, that's hard. You can Google all kinds of advice. But it comes down to you two getting on the same page. To do that, I recommend the following:
1. Each of you wrote down what kind of life you want on a piece of paper at the same time.
2. When done, swap papers and read what each other wrote.
3. See where there is common ground. See where the differences are.
4. Then discuss those differences. But remember, you're not trying to "convince" anyone if anything right now. You're just trying to understand the mind set if the other person.
5. Keep talking and drilling down into the why.
6. Be prepared to compromise. Yes, even you.
7. Remember, this is a behavioral issue. You need to know what drives that behavior. Then if any adjustments are made, say the SO says they will start to save more, then remember, like any behavior, it takes time and there will be hiccups along the way. Think of starting a diet.

Lastly, remember that FIRE is a miniscule segment of society and extreme. Not everyone will be on board with this. So if you SO isn't, you need to decide what's more important to you: Them or having FI. Only you can answer that. But let's say you're saving 60% of your income right now. Maybe after a few conversations it goes down to 40% (still really friggin high) and that would give your SO the life they want now, and allows you to achieve your goals. Granted, it may add another 3 years, but like I said, you need to be will to compromise.

You might try something to show her the value of savings. For instance is there something extravagant she really wants. Tell her you'll work together toward it but it means curtailing nearterm spending. Maybe it's an upgrade on her car lease, or a vacation to the Galapagos islands. She might never have experienced the benefits of disciplined saving and investing.

My clients are pushing back on it this year, and I can't say I blame them. If I were in their shoes, I'd rather take the risk of not filing than the expense of filing again. From my own point of view, I don't really want to spend my time on such returns, either, even if the revenue and easy return are nice.

Does anyone feel like they don’t want to go back to normal? On the one hand, absolutely I want to. I miss seeing friends, dressing up, going out, and traveling for work. On the other hand I have saved so much money over the past year, spent a lot more time with family than I would have ever been able to, and actually rested and been able to focus on my wellness (started therapy and treatment for a chronic condition.)
