Sorry if this is a dumb question. I want to move my Vanguard IRA to Fidelity so all my accounts are in one place. I hold mutual funds only in Vanguard - do I have to liquidate before starting the transfer?
I’ve done an in-kind transfer before but they were all with ETFs and individual stocks. Not sure if there’s any special considerations when it comes to mutual funds
Fidelity will probably hold most if not all the mutual funds. If they are vanguard mutual funds you will probably have a fee to buy more at fidelity. Probably not a fee to sell there. Check with fidelity. So you can probably transfer in kind but may want to swap to non fee funds once you get there
yes you can transfer. you can initiate an ACATS transfer and not need to sell anything. google it.
they will. I have several vanguard funds in my fidelity accounts. I transferred several funds from another brokerage and one was a vanguard fund.
Parking your account under fidelity doesn’t require this, I don’t think.
Moving the funds over does. But you don’t have to do this yourself. Go to fidelity and start the transfer in process, and they’ll tell vanguard to send funds. Vanguard will do the sale and send funds to fidelity, then you’ll have to invest those funds.
Yeah. Either way they shouldn’t worry about it. Either it’s parking funds, or fidelity and vanguard will figure it out themselves. Rebuying a fund is important to consider, though, if just the money and not the “shares” are sent over. (E.g., send over $10k means the dollars land in Fidelity’s core position, not as $10k of VTSAX)
I transferred a vanguard account with vanguard mutual funds to fidelity and the funds went in kind
