UPDATE:
I interviewed today, went very smoothly 🙂 (they didn't go into my problem areas). All that would remain is a last partner interview.
I wonder, if I do eventually get SM offer, if they might peg down my grade AFTER background checks show my previous grades? (my CV lists functional titles)
Note: Yes, this is for a niche specialised tech/industry role
Congrats!
I’ve never heard of us offering a title, and then downgrading it. If you have provided your resume, (which you would have had to do to get an interview in the first place) then they already know your lineage.
If they downgrade you, it would be at the initial offer stage.
Best of luck!
Ask yourself why they invited you to the interview and play up that strength.
Be ready to talk about how you’ll address the gaps proactively.

They’re likely trying to pick you up for a high demand skill be it technical or otherwise. Focus on that.

Expect to be down leveled 2-3 rungs below SM if offered a job.
Senior manager at PwC is experienced M at other consulting firms, we don’t have revenue targets, expectations is to handles 2-3 projects in parallel.
Our directors are one level below PPMD.
To be honest, and not to scare you, but the topics that you are saying you lack experience with are the only ones I really care about when I interview an SM. I’ll spend 5-10 minutes asking about your domain-specific knowledge, but as a potential SM I want to make sure you have experience with sales, have at least 3 years of experience leading a team (ideally two at once if possible, but engagement leadership is a must), and want to know about what you are seeing from an SM’s viewpoint in my specific industry. I’ll ask for specific examples of each.
The likely reality is that they are interviewing you and will try to offer you a M position.
Either way, best of luck.
