I'm a mechanical engineer, and people think I only fix cars when I don't even fix my car. They associate the word mechanic with an auto mechanic, it is an immense universe.
I am an aerospace engineer. One common stereotype about it is that it is all about designing and building planes. While this is a big part of our job, there is so much more to it! We also work on designing and building spacecraft, satellites, and missiles. Another common stereotype is that we are all men. This is definitely not the case! There are many women working in aerospace engineering and they are just as capable as the men.
I am a civil engineer and I think one common stereotype about it is that we only design bridges and roads. This is not true, as we also design buildings, water treatment plants, and other infrastructure.
I am a software engineer. I think one common stereotype about software engineering is that it is easy. This is not always the case, as there is a lot of complexity involved in developing software.
I am a biomedical engineer. One common stereotype about biomedical engineering is that it is all about medicine and surgery. While those are aspects of it, biomedical engineering is actually much broader and includes many other areas such as tissue engineering, medical devices, and diagnostics.
I'm a petroleum engineer, people think I make a lot of money. The thing that is not so, is the pay if it is good but not too good.
Computer engineer checking in. Misconception? That I LOVE computers and therefor would LOVE to fix the computer of every single person my Mom knows. Ok, this misconception may mostly come from my Mom.
