9 am subways aren’t scary - people are traveling around for work. I’m a man so I can’t say anything with confidence on how you would feel but I think it’s pretty safe!

Ah thanks for the insight! I was thinking that a part of the increase in crimes were bc office workers aren’t returning to the office as much, so the crazies feel even more confident to act out. But that’s good to know there are reg people traveling for work!
I’m 5’4 and 100 pounds and I’ve taken the J to/from JFK three times this year, as early as 7am and as late as 9pm. I had no issues! If I get on a car with people who make me feel nervous, I move to a different car at the next stop. The news on the subway is tragic and it means that I don’t ride it mindlessly or distracted/not paying attention, but I do still ride it. I understand not wanting to, but keep in mind the travel time by car is less consistent than by subway. I think that time of day in that direction will be fine though :)
This (is written by a New Yorker - bain). That said, all this should be standard operating procedure for any trip anywhere in NYC.
Write to our mayor/DA and tell him how you feel. We need these pricks to take action

i’ve done this trip recently (in December pre-holidays) and the train was empty enough to get a seat but busy enough that later on, not everyone has a seat

Train. I just did that at around the same time and it was entirely people going to work and other people going to the airport
I’d take Uber if I had heavy luggage and/or had to make a lot of transfers for subway. If it’s a straight shot on subway, I’d do it (car can take longer if traffic). It’s an active time of day (and I’m F).
No one can really confirm what will happen when you’re traveling. Frankly, I’d take Uber for the peace of mind.

The cab should be flat fee if you’re from Manhattan. Definitely do that or Uber

F here and I'd recommend the LIRR, so much faster than Uber.
5’2 local gal here, born and raised. Where do you live? J runs local in queens so I would avoid it for that reason. Any way you can take the A or E instead? I think the subway would be fine at 9am, just sit in the conductor car towards the middle of the train (you’ll see them when they poke their heads out when the train pulls up to the station), that always makes me feel safer.
I live in manhattan and hate taking an uber to JFK. It’s so expensive. When I used to live in queens, it was much easier to uber (or call a local car service).
F here, had similar debate a few days ago and ended up taking the subway and it was fine. Definitely be aware of your surrounding, I did notice more people standing close to the middle of the platform than before.
Cabs have a flat rate fare of $52 plus a few taxes that nets to around $60. I’ve found this reliable!
If the company pays for it, take a cab no question! At the same time, I'm a tiny woman and have been commuting throughout the pandemic with no problems. The trouble areas are Herald Square, Union Square, and Times Square but above ground, where the crazies gather and I was called some racial slurs. The subways have more homeless people lately but I haven't seen more crazies. I might be numb to it though.
That time to the airport will be more than fine. It really comes down to how much you care about lugging around your things.
I usually take an Uber out of sheer laziness or if the flight is at a weird time at night or early early morning.
How much an hour worth to you? Ya know.
Uber and subway are not the only options. Take one of the express busses that go from grand central or port authority. It’s like $15-20.

Those buses are won’t city buses, but coach buses. They’re a great option! I’ve definitely taken them before. Also, taking city buses is incredibly convenient. I was like you when I first moved to New York and lived in Manhattan. But living in Brooklyn has now made me quite fond of the bus. So convenient!
I recommend getting to Penn Station (if you’re in manhattan) then LIRR and then AirTran. It’s 3 stops and I’ve never had an issue plus it’s a lot quicker.

I would suggest Uber since you are already worried. If money can bring a peace of mind do it. Especially you are carrying luggage as well. You can make money again it’s not a big prob

Thanks! It’s a short vacation so everything I need is packed in a carryon backpack, so wouldn’t have a ton of luggage.
Women here! I used to take the train to everything including jfk all the time… now not so much. The attacks have really freaked me out.

You could compromise and take the LIRR if you’re not too far from Atlantic Terminal.

Lots of Q’s of which area I live so here is a screenshot of what CityMapper recommends as of now. I think J would be the most convenient out of all the options. And I can always time leaving home based on when train is arriving so I’m not waiting too long on a platform. Not sure if recos are changing based on this info!
Ahh ok. So you can also take the J train to Fulton St. and then transfer to the A which runs express (this won’t show up on citymapper bc it has you going “backwards” first to get to Fulton).
The A from Fulton to Howard Beach takes like 35 mins, AND the Howard Beach Air Train stop is closer to JFK than Sutphin Blvd on the J, so you’d save a bit of time on the Air Train too.
I’m a woman and made the decision in my first year of consulting, I will never subway to the airport. The anxiety is not worth the savings.
the train to kennedy is so easy. especially if yr traveling light. and that time of day is safe and busy. if you were flying out of laguardia, i’d say just call the cab but only because that process requires up to two annoying bus transfers after the subway lol
Uber. Unless you're doing the one carry-on thing, Uber. No use lugging anything around whilst making your way on public transportation.
