9 am subways aren’t scary - people are traveling around for work. I’m a man so I can’t say anything with confidence on how you would feel but I think it’s pretty safe!

Ah thanks for the insight! I was thinking that a part of the increase in crimes were bc office workers aren’t returning to the office as much, so the crazies feel even more confident to act out. But that’s good to know there are reg people traveling for work!
I’m 5’4 and 100 pounds and I’ve taken the J to/from JFK three times this year, as early as 7am and as late as 9pm. I had no issues! If I get on a car with people who make me feel nervous, I move to a different car at the next stop. The news on the subway is tragic and it means that I don’t ride it mindlessly or distracted/not paying attention, but I do still ride it. I understand not wanting to, but keep in mind the travel time by car is less consistent than by subway. I think that time of day in that direction will be fine though :)
This (is written by a New Yorker - bain). That said, all this should be standard operating procedure for any trip anywhere in NYC.

Update: I used the J and air train to get to JFK from Manhattan in the AM. It was safe, easy and convenient. Would highly recommend esp if you’re low maintenance traveling only with a backpack like me ☺️ Happily eating my sandwich by the gate now. Ready to enjoy the rest of my vacation 😎✈️
Cool! Happy travels!

😂 Don't even think about taking the train in NYC as a single woman in 2022 unless you absolutely have no choice. Don't be cheap when it comes to your safety. Just expense it.
Dang this triggered people. I take the subway all the time. I mostly just hate how dirty it is. Yes, you have to keep your wits about you and watch out for the mentally unwell - unfortunately there are a lot of them. 9 AM is a rush hour in NYC on a weekday - a lot of places start at 10.
Keep in mind that the crime stories you hear on the subway are few out of the millions of people that ride it per week. You don’t hear about all of the people that successfully and safely ride the subway everyday. I’ve taken the subway at 9 am and at 4 am recently - I am a 5’0 petite woman but I’m cognizant of my surroundings and when I feel unsafe. Have been totally fine
There are definitely more mentally unstable people. I don’t “pretend that there’s not to make myself feel better.” Instead, I remain alert and identify who makes me feel unsafe in my vicinity and then move to another part of the platform or another car
Uber, no question. Your safety and peace of mind are priceless
9 am is packed and fine on subway. Won’t be so busy on J in opposite direction but still should be no problem. May be faster too. If you’re worried about it though just get Uber.

Unless you are rich, just take the subway.
And from your post it kind of sounds like $70 is a lot of money to you. I don't think it's worth throwing $70 into the garbage for a ride to the airport where you will certainly be more comfortable sure but you will only save maybe 15 mins max and could actually end up in traffic that makes it a loss of time compared to the train.
You'll be perfectly safe. Just be alert.
This is ridiculous. Riding the subway at 9 am is not compromising safety. Jesus.
If you live anywhere near a J train stop (instead of the A or better the E) the subway at 9am is fine. And it’s way more consistent time wise trip to JFK (car could take 30 minutes or 2.5 hours).
I live off the J and could you be good taking the train - it all depends on how much luggage you have. There are some parts of the J line that is a giant nope for me. Is it better than the 90s - absolutely. But that in no way means that I would take the J train with more than one piece of luggage to an airport in 2022.
Uber. Especially if it’s company related travel. Charge it to the AmEx.
I won’t say you’re overreacting but think about it from this perspective: “where am I most comfortable and what is the value of my comfort?”
In my experience (28F), the subway is absolutely fine during rush hour. Plenty of people, just not packed like it was pre pandemic (which is actually a nice thing). I would not be worried, and I would save that money for the fun parts of your vacation :-)
When I was in school I’d say train but now that I make money, 100% Uber. Safety aside, navigating the whole airport train system can be a real pain especially if you’re running even a little late

Also you don’t want to deal with luggage on a crowded train full of New Yorkers.
Hi, NYC native here 👋🏼 I live by the J train station and commute to work early in the morning to Sutphin (E line) around 8-9 AM on weekdays. It’s safe and there’s lots of people also going to work. I’m also a female.
I recommend yellow cab. Uber surge is crazy. Airport rates for cabs are fixed.
Woman here and I would take the train even with luggage (unless it’s something you need to check), but do whatever makes you feel best! The subways are generally safe, you just need to be more watchful these days. And stick by other people.
I’m a guy, but I’d say it’s completely fine at that hour. I took it from JFK at 1 am on a Sunday in January and it felt a little sketchy but ended up being fine. I might take a taxi at that hour in the future. If you don’t want to take the train, consider a yellow taxi instead. There’s a $52 flat fare between JFK and Manhattan (plus tolls and $3.30 in fees). https://www1.nyc.gov/site/tlc/passengers/taxi-fare.page
FWIW - You won’t be the only person on the train to go to JFK. Stay with others with luggage and y’all will be safer in numbers.

I would 100% take the train unless I had a ton of suitcases or something. Also a guy, though.
Just think of it as an added cost to your plane ticket. My wife and I always just travel by rideshare/taxi. Granted we’re loyal Delta travelers and due to our status get free luggage check in, upgrades etc. so for us the cost just levels. Also get credit card points for using rideshare services. Lots of pros and cons but if you’re a frequent traveler get a credit card for your airline of choice.

So a few weeks ago I was in the same place, and decided to go with the subway. Luckily it was fairly busy and nothing crazy happened. But if you feel like you'd be more at ease taking an Uber, do that instead. Also check out curb, sometimes their prices are lower. Woman here
