I’d ask for 130 and settle for 120, maybe 115 if I really wanted it. Definitely not too high. I made 90k as a mid.
Glassdoor is next to useless in my experience. Personally I don’t like to give a salary range; they know your number is negotiable. (If you want to seem accommodating you can say “I’d like to consider the full compensation package including benefits/vacation/etc but I’m looking for ~130.”) Bear in mind covid and all the other stuff you’re no doubt bearing in mind — flooded labor market, depressed pricing, etc etc — but yeah, I’d ask for 130.
95-100k as a first time senior is probably reasonable. You can try for 130k but you’ll probably get talked down. Also depends how many years you have in the industry and your book.
Where are you located?
Nyc! The taxes be hurtinnnnnnnnn
In NYC I've made 90 - 120k as a senior
Pro
Same.
130 is super reasonable. Go for it!
Good point, thank you! Thank you everyone! Much appreciated!
Damn I’m getting underpaid
Senior Designers and Senior Art Directors are on a different pay grade but believe they shouldn’t. Designers are always at the end of the funnel on a projects, which is unfortunate since it leads to many late nights and weekends. I feel you, been there.
Go high, they can say “no,” but at least you asked. You’re not asking for an unreasonable amount.
What if you are sr, work for an nyc company, but do not live in nyc. What is an appropriate salary then for a more suburban lifestyle? Is 100 good? In a state with no state taxes?
piggybacking of this post...what is the highest number someone who is already a Sr. CW in NYC could ask for at a new place without it being offensive?
According to a recent salary survey I read, 130k is in the top 5% in NYC. So if you have a better book and track record than 95% of other writers in NYC, definitely don't accept anything less.
I’ll never understand creatives who insist on being underpaid. Which survey, Robert Half? Those things are nonsense. They include jobs that are similarly titled but worlds removed from the work of agency creatives. Obviously the quality of your book matters, but it’s a rough correlation at best. I got 90k as a mid with 2.5 years experience and no awards. How? The agency had originally been looking for seniors, but they liked me and agreed to that salary as a compromise. Money can come a million different ways, as long as you have the confidence to ask for it.
