I have worked at a large university IT organization as a part time employee during my masters program. It’s very chill and the pay is average. But some of the benefits really outweigh the pay gap especially when these jobs are taken at the right age. People who do these roles typically are not chasing money. They have side hobbies and just want to live in peaceful home towns doing what they like. I loved working in university IT so much - made my best work connections there.

Absolutely plus if you want some of the advantages like tuition reduction and great healthcare then it make sense! It’s a great break from the crazy and you can always jump back into the rat race after a few years of experience. I guess what you might miss out on are very high tech innovative projects. But again how much of that do we really do now anyway.
