I agree with bcg1. Trying to get "laid off" has worse implications ban you realize. You seriously think it's a good idea to have multiple think you suck at your job just to keep money that 5 years from now will seem like nothing? Your network should be more important
Screw integrity...this is strictly business and you should do whatever benefits you. If there is a way for you to retain your bonus, you should 100% explore it. The firm wouldnt blink an eye lid in letting you go tomorrow if they so wanted, so why should we care about them. Go ahead and do whats right for YOU, not for anyone else. May the force be with you!
OP: Although you agreed to pay back the bonus, there are ways to avoid that obligation... a new employer may pay it back for you, you may be able to work it out with the firm, or you can threaten bankruptcy.
Ask a lawyer about your options using a free consult rather than thinking you know it all. I agree with the earlier posters saying you're emotional. Get a useful opinion rather than people calling you a reneger (try pronouncing that word out loud 😖)
Op I understand. PwC can be an awful experience. If you're benched just wait and use the time to apply to other jobs.
You guys are being a little harsh. The signing bonuses can also serve to trap people in TERRIBLE situations for a long period of time, where they're used and abused. OP, be careful about burning bridges, but it seems that a straight up offer for voluntary fat trimming to your RP might be the most polite way to go.
I've seen both. But my point is that you get (at least in part) the culture you create around you. I have seen interns transform culture of teams and other instances where an individual senior or manager makes it completely toxic. But adding toxicity to the cesspool will never make it better.
Nothing harsh about any of it, and we know enough of the story to make that judgment. The OP wants to quit and no one is suggesting they stay. They're just pointing out that lying to avoid living up to the terms of the contract is a dishonest and crappy thing to do.
Always try to leave on good or neutral terms. No one knows who you will come across when and how.
ATK1 - if you're fired you need to pay back the signing bonus if you're laid off you don't
❄️❄️❄️
Such a beta move. Sad!
More like 35k so no not a couple grand...despite the "advice" I'd still rather get laid off
Yep
The signing bonus is just a way for them to keep people here 2 years. If you do really wanna get laid off just roll of your current project and then say no to everything that comes your way. Make up genuine sounding reasons to why you don't want to be on that project. Maybe put in one or two days pto every week/other week on mondays. Pretty soon you will get laid off because they don't want someone on the beach.
The only caveat is I don't know if this will qualify you not having to repay signing bonus. You may be fired for cause or underperformance in which case I would think you don't need to pay back the signing bonus.
We all make mistakes and it's awesome that you recognize that this is a mistake. I'm with the other on here that say that you should try and get another firm to cover it because this getting laid off plan could backfire real bad.
1. How long are the terms for the sign on bonus? If it's a year, you can do it.
2. Have you tried working under different: group / management / location? Those are big factors in your happiness. There are great executives at all of our companies and there are shit heads.
I think i get it. The signing bonus was one of factors that OP considered while taking the pdubb job. But its a lot of money. Op , i knew someone who was adamant too not to give bond money back. For years to come every time he applied for job he had to ponder what was his status in last job- did he quit or fired or should he cook up other stories. Every new company would henceforth check with your ex companies for background chevk. We live in world of consulting where every one lies. So when you tell your story to someone else they will think you have done some serious crime and you are covering up the story with something . You need to look good materially as well as in perception- unless you open up your company or become an entrepreneur. You constantly need take steps to show your great character or ability to serve clients. In a way consultants are prostitutes. Treat this as sunk cost. Look at the great future forward.
Repay it dude. If you're miserable think about it as cheap way to regain your sanity. Sorry you had poor experience. And hope you have a better place at another bowl 🐟. I felt like this in my first job out of college.
P11 jump in a lake you don't know me bro #gtfo
How long ago did you start working there?
How long have you been at the firm op? If you have another offer, better to just quit.
How much is this signing bonus that you won't give it up?
Are we not talking about couple of grands? Come on! Is it really worth it?
