I understand that. That can be accommodated by hybrid models. I am confused about why they are forcing people to go back to the office. I suspect the reason is not preferences of a group of employees.
Well... Look at the bigger picture , What will happen to those big officers , shops that operate and dependent on IT crowd. Canteen , even cigarette tapri outside office..
Wfh is good for us , IT people but economically it breaks the chain and affect these sectors big.
So somu pressure from government is also there which is justified.

Does it break the chain or force a new chain to be made?

Butts in seat power mentality, some (definitely not all, but some) industries do in fact need people onsite, money sunk in leases, pressure from surrounding businesses that rely on office workers, having consultants wfh could impact bill rates and associated margins depending on how contracts are structured, etc.

Your logic makes a lot of sense but it feels like they are trying to go back in time instead of evolving with the changes Covid posed.
I suspect the economy and operating models should adjust to all of these factors just like a good chunk of the retail sector went online during the Covid. That sounds more reasonable demotivating workers who find wfh appealing.
